Hello everyone,

Two basic questions and I know they have been asked a million times.

What size trailer would be perfect for a SCUT? Brakes? Dual axle?

The weight of a SCUT, is it a concern for driving over a septic system, and tanks?

Thank you,
Mike

What model SCUT, and with what attachments?

An 18 - 20 hp SCUT with just a mower deck is going to weigh somewhere under 1000 lbs. The larger the tractor hp and frame, the more it will weigh. Add a loader and you'll add anywhere from 500 to 1200 lbs. depending on the loader model. Add a backhoe and that's another 1200 to 2000 lbs.

You want a trailer that's long enough to be able to hold the tractor and implements without anything hanging out the front, rear or sides, plus you want it to be rated so that the most weight you'll ever have on it isn't any more than 60 to 75% of the rated carrying capacity of the trailer. Anything over 2000 lbs. total combined weight of trailer and load you should have brakes on the tractor. Any Gross weight above 3500 lbs. or so you want a dual axle trailer.

As to your question on the weight being too much for a septic system, it depends on the tractor model, and what kind of tires are on it as to how the weight will be distributed, plus the exact specifics on the septic system need to be taken into account. If it is a sand mound with shallow leach pipes then it will be more susceptible to damage by weight from above than if it is solid ground and/or gravel bed above the pipes, etc. It really is an "It depends" kind of question.

Thanks for the info Sean. I'm between a BX25D or GC1720 and most likely going with R4 tires.
I would recommend a 18' dual axle, 7K trailer. By Law you'll need brakes on at least 1 axle.

I drive my GC2400 over my septic field all the time, usually just the tractor and mower since I remove the loader for mowing.

Well, hello neighbor. Yes turf tires, I did not trust the industrial tires not to leave marks on the lawn in wet conditions! I also did not load the tires to help keep the weight down. I use big ballast box when I need weight.

Do you have turf tires?
Funny enough I'm located in Ansonia.

My BX2350 (similar to the newer BXs in size) weighs 1400 lbs with no attachments. 5' mower deck is 250 lbs, front loader 500 lbs, and the backhoe for the BX2xs is 500-600 lbs. If I take it on the road with the FEL, I'll also have my rear weight box, another 500-600 lbs.

Figure my weight is 1400 + 500 + 600 + 100 (front and underbelly guards) = 2600 lbs!! These little SCUT's are a lot heavier than they look!

I'll be towing my BX1870 with just the FEL (I removed the MMM) on my 5x10 single axle trailer. It's rated at 3500 and the curb weight is around 750. So, I'm well under the 3500 rating. I do have to leave the loader bucket raised over the rails of the trailer, just to get more weight towards the tongue and to also get the 3PH lower links out of the way of the gate/ramp on the rear of the trailer.

I have the same trailer and load it the same way but the 48" deck fits the width perfectly.
