I just recieced this Wheel Horse 520 H in my shop with the complaint of surging alng with a problem with over heating..... hmmm. When asked about maintenance I was told that it was maintained with loving care as this is his baby. So dummy me asked how long it has been acting up and was told it has been this way for 2 years.... hmmmm. I was also aked if it could be repaired for under 100 dollars...hmmmmm... I stated that I would remove the air cleaner and filter to have a look see... hmmmmmmm seems tha this baby has recieve the ultimate lack of maintenace.

I hope these pictures will provoke more maintenance from my brothers here on MTF. If not look forward to some major money issues.

I suspect his statment acting that way "for two years" was your first clue! :fing20: :eek:mg: :thSick:

For starters it will need a carb overhaul, tune up, oil and filter change and the shroud removed, blades sharpened and fin cleansing, blades sharpened or around 400 dollars.

Hopefully there are many more folks like him in your neighborhood....it'll keep making you $$$$. :fing32:
I've got 2 Craftsman lawn tractors a Poulan without a deck and a 127 Cub that needs the engine overhauled... so it looks like :ROF this recession is a boom to repairs.

Just no excuse for that. I'm not perfect, but the precleaner and filter get blown out with compressed air after each use, whole rig gets a blow down including cooling fins, oil and tires are checked and the thing gets a grease job to push any dirt out of the bearings/bushings. Probably some here who would call me sloppy for not pressure washing the underside of the deck and sharpening the blades more than once a month.

Guys like this actually are not worth your time. He's not a regular customer, and he's likely to stiff you on the repair bill when it becomes something major. Then you're stuck trying to sell his POJ for repair costs or trying to part it out.

So did you let him pay you less that $100.00 for a new air filter?

I live in a small farming community and we all know one another. He has oked the repair and was totally suprised by the amount of dirt on the tractor. In reality todays money problems are the reason that repair shops all over the country will be flourishing as it cheaper to repair than always replace.

You just tell him that routine maintenance will keep that thing running forever and quote him a price for maintenance every three months. Ignorance is not bliss, but it can be profitable!
I have customers (I sell outdoor cedar furniture in the winter) that complain that their chairs look bad after sitting outside for a couple of years. I just tell them I can renew them for a small fee, drop it off and I'll freshen them up! Pressure wash, varnish, viola! 50 bucks and a happy customer!
