Well, after pressure washing the 8199 and letting it dry I noticed a drop of oil on the concrete. It turns out that I have a cracked transmission housing. Is something like this even available?

Actually, it is not hard at all to find a spare transmission case, I suspect in a day you will find a number of people on here have them laying around.

They turn up on Ebay quite often.

Just a big job to disassemble and replace.

You should have no problem finding one cheap.

how bad is the crack? depending on size and location it may be easily fixed. Regular JB weld will hold up in some instances, or you may can get it welded fairly easily.
I'll put up a photo tomorrow. It doesn't look good. What is the main type of abuse that causes a transmission housing to crack on these tractors? Will I need any special tools when I tear one down?

Special tools - internal and external snap ring pliers, seal drivers, gear puller.

This will give you a taste of what you are in for:

Not hard if you have any gearbox experience, but a bit time consuming as you must disassemble a good bit of the tractor.

Stitch it. Kits available locally or on the net. Drill, tap, stitch. No welding and about as strong as the original part.

Depending on the location of the crack you might be able to stitch it without breaking it down.

Can't say I've ever heard of a cracked case on one of these machines, though since you have a loader it might be part of it depending on how it was previously used. Diving into the transmission isn't that bad, just follow the G series shop manual and it'll give you a step by step process on the break down. Label parts on a large sheet of something like Sheldon did, you don't want to get any of it mixed up.

From what I see in the photos, I have all the tools I'll need for the teardown. I'll grab the pdf and start reading up on the process. The tractor seems to be too handy to let it go to scrap.

I'm going to need a recommended source for seals and gaskets.

If you want to consider stitching the crack, have a look at this. As was said before, depending on location you may be able to do this without a teardown at all.

That's a cool system but I was taught a method that uses regular screws/bolts.

Drill past the end of the crack, tap, thread in a bolt and trim it down flush. Drill the next hole on the crack at the edge of the circumference of the first plug.

Rinse and repeat. You end up with a series of plugs, each a crescent moon.

No special tools or kits needed.

I wonder what caused the crack to begin with.

These are the National numbers for some of the seals you'll need. Might as well reseal the clutch hubs while your in there as well. The case seal can be bought from Gravely, or made with bulk material.

Axle: 470165
Brake: 470934
Inner clutch hub: 470211
Outer clutch hub: 472636

Thanks. Do they happen to make a kit for all of the seals in the transmission?

Not that I know of. Maybe from a Gravely dealer, but your looking at a lot more money for the seals. When I priced out 2 of each of those seals, and then a case seal from Gravely it was going to be close to $100 in seals. With the National seals from RockAuto and a bulk roll of material from Napa I think I ended up having $35 in the same amount of stuff.

So, for those that have been around these Graveley's for a while...

1. What am I looking at pricewise for a used transmission case or a whole transmission for that matter?

2. How do I identify the model transmission? I found a tag with "2744" on it.

3. Are there accessories that need to be identified when looking for a case?

Thanks,

Smitty
