I have to stop and blow out the radiator screen, the radiator and of course the whole tractor. So about 20 - 30 minutes of cutting and 20 minutes of blowing. Just in case you are wondering yes I chemically cleaned out the cooling system, replaced the thermostat ( that was stuck open ) and have cussed it more than once. Next I am going to remove the mulching baffle I welded in to see if that helps.

Wow Rich that is serious intake. I get a little bit on my screens when I do the tall grass in fields, but the normal yard length. Hardly any. And my running boards never fill up like that. I can just imagine how much is all around the mower. It does look well mulched. You have any thoughts why its not dropping down? Just because the intake is in the cockpit?

I know the Klaus cutting machines have a reverse blower to keep the radiator free of debris might be something to look into

Mikey,
When I first started using it I thought about putting some high level air intakes on it kind of the way some military vehicles have. It would be to much of hassel with all that stuff sticking up and around every where. Just going back to a chute discharge deck will probably be the most sensical.

yagerzzz,
No fun, I get covered also!

Jack,
It does mulch really well, the only thing I can think is
1 - the deck just was not designed to be a mulching deck
2 - the ground is pretty irregular and I have the deck wheels down as low as they can go, meaning the deck is reaised pretty high. I still get some scalping, but with deck so high at times the grass clippings just come out from under it???

LGT145guy,
The Kubota I have has the exact same type of design pulling air in through the operator area and blowing the hot air out the front, it does not have a mulching deck and it does not have much of an issue with over heating. The Kubota screen does get covered eventully though! ( it would be nice if a tractor company would come up with a way to reverse the air flow for summer and winter operation ). One of my biggest concerns of all of this is that the motor overheats.
thanx all

That would be a great idea if they did for all liquid cooled.

I do know I run my deck without a deflector, and it does throw the clippings 6 feet at just half throttle.

I would agree these decks are 200 lbs, they do tend to hug the ground very well. The blades are just above the bottom edge of the deck. So the scalping on uneven ground is a cautious concern.

Just imagine the extra weight of a gear driven bagger.

With the diesel that's all torque power with nothing stalling it. So I can see why it blows it out far.

Before and after pictures. I installed the deck baffle hoping to convert the deck into a mulching deck, then I removed the baffle and went back to conventional blades. The mower still needs to be serviced for the season, it did not get much run time last year.

Rich this going to be your main mower this year?

Jack,
Yes the 16D will be the main mower this year unless something happens to it. I used exclusively last year, the only time it didn't cut the grass is when the wife would try and help me out time wise and cut the yard with the Lawnboy walk behind. I replaced the glow plugs this year hoping to get it to start easier but that did not help. Next I'll try changing the glow plug module if I can get it at a reasonable price. You asked about the idiot lights a while ago, they are stock. Note with the deck back to original it still gets clippings all around the intake. I have used twice this year and both times I was able to cut the whole yard and the engine idiot light for over temperature has NOT come on. I'm afraid as spring turns into summer and the grass gets drier I won't be so lucky! I'm really disappointed, it is such a neat mower but for my use's it just does not seem to fit the way I had envisioned! Oh well it has been fun!

Rich I used the GT65 for all the mowing last year.............never had any problems at all.............sometimes the clippings got in the intake , but only when mowing some tall grass. Nothing unsual, same thing happens with a Kubota BX. I did move my deck forward a bit, because I "Tim the Tool Man" with larger tires.

I did have on incident of overheating, but that was a belt issue. Kind of an unplanned idiot light test.

I was not planning of using my deck this year.............mowing with the TB and finishing a flail mower on the GT65.

On finding a cheap module, you might just have good luck with that. Those deals exist. There was a dealer letting go of his old stock.........I got a new charge pump for less than $20 with shipping...............did not need it, but check the price for a new one. So there is hope. :thThumbsU

I just rechecked your pictures...........Let me see how low my blades sit in my deck, so we can compare.

Alright everybody - have not been on here much lately. I retired the end of December and have been stupid busy?? What's up with that! At any rate I'm going to keep trying to make the LGT 16D into a mulching deck. Hopefully there will be some pictures attached and a welding close up that is almost as good as Mikey's!!:thThumbsU - Too old and the back really appreciates the Kubota's help as you all can see, I usually have a very friendly 4 legged supervisor ( if she ever has a complaint about my work I can slip her a bribe [ dog treat ] and she quickly rescinds her complaint). One of our neighborhood kids came by with a friend to also make sure I was doing everything properly! Everybody keep there fingers crossed that this will do it, I really don't feel like going to the next stage!

Mikey,
Not being snarky but a picture tells a thousand words! If you look at the recent pictures towards the front of the deck you will see the newly installed curve piece's of metal ( from an old Federal Pacific electric panel cover ) that have the multitude of brace's welded all over them. Hoping that when the new metal shrouds hit things ( like that never happens ) they won't get bent inwards towards the blades. I'm hoping the new shrouds will help to contain the mess getting chewed up, my next thought is to install parts of old rubber tires around the deck so that there is not so much air gap between the bottom edge of the deck and the ground. The trouble with that is I wouldn't be able to mulch leaves that way and it would be a lot more work - again! I've seen your welds and over all yours are much nicer then mine, that was only a small stretch that looked semi presentable that I took a picture of!! I will be mounting the deck today and giving it all a test run! Let me know if what the difference is, is still not clear, I know what I type and what I think are two entirely different things :dunno:!

Drum roll everybody - spent about two hours on the 16D today cutting grass / dirt leaves etc. it did not over heat :thThumbsU, I did not wipe off the screens one time during the cutting, did not have to stop and blow out the radiator once. It was sunny out and about 70 degrees, so a and the true test will be this summer. I would like to install a temperature gauge on it some where, any recommendations for brand style etc.? Although the screens do look dirty in the pictures keep in mind I used to have to wipe them off constantly before and this time I did not do it once to see if it would over heat. The screens on top of the hood stayed clean the whole time! I'm thinking I thought this out about right this time!! Enjoy
