So, several of you know my posts well. It all started this spring when I started my JD316 restore project. That migrated into a purchase and repair/modificaiton of my "rare" G100 garden tractor (for daily use). Got everything I need. Daily mowing tractor and a tractor with hydraulics. You'd think I would be happy right?:dunno:

So, I've made several trips to the local JD dealer and they have a beautiful x758 sitting right inside the door (I think they do it on purpose...haha). So I was just reading thinking of how nice it would be to own one (I dont have that kind of $$$).

So I read this thread:
http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=225502

Well, dont they just happen to have one of those 1026r models with a loader sitting right outside the door and to make matters worse, there is a clean 4100 with loader for sale locally. I want ONE!!!!

Ok, reality check. Then I see this thread:
http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=136600

Hmm, maybe I wont be as happy with my 316 rebuild as I thought......(yes, I know I will be)

So I think, lets see if there are any x595 type tractors for sale in the area; just for fun. There is.....still dont have the money for them.

I need to step away from looking at John Deere tractors (or stay away from the dealer)! I'm afraid I wont ever be happy until one of those pretty newer models are sitting in my driveway! Does this happen to any of you guys or am I alone here as a rookie addict? lol :hide:

Well, coming from a very similar circumstance. I used to say I "WANT" a lot... but then I got to thinking.... for what purpose do I "WANT" it.... shoot I do not even NEED what I have. Somewhere in there is a balance between hobby and work. Its fuzzy for me.... but there.

My 318 is the worker, I keep thinking, ohhhhh I should go get a 4-5 but then realize if I get a 4-5 they are newer and I wont have as much to work on, plus less tractor cash to play with. I could sell all of mine and be 3/4 of the way to a 2012 X748... but then I would have an oversize tractor for my postage stamp yard and not a single thing to tinker on and no money to go buy one to work on.... So I am opting to keep the 318, 110, sell the 140 and 212... part out the other 318 and then buy myself a 332 and a model 44 loader... then I have the best of both worlds... a loader, cool vintage tractors, and something I can tinker on and a little bit of money to play with.

There are a limited number of threads that have titles like "425 restoration"... WNYTractorTinker has probably the best of those. LOTS of 318, 200 series, 110 resto threads. Restorations are for a hobby.

So the question you have to ask yourself "Do you want the 1026r because its the latest and greatest? OR becuase you need it? You have a G100 that mows. You have a project 316 soon to be 318. Once you get done with the 318 get a loader for it and have fun.

Same thing happens to me... I look at cheap 345's and other models and I keep talking myself out of them... I can buy older Deere's for less, buy the parts for less, spend the same amount of time working on them and have the same amount of fun... if the fun is equal might as well side with the cheaper route :fing32:

It happens to me all the time. Any compact tractor I see with a loader makes me go bonkers. Reality is there is no way I could afford one so I just keep slowly improving my 318. It will do just about anything I need a " small" tractor to do and I already have a bigger farm tractor.

Besides I have a Harley Davidson Heritage Softail wandering around in my dreams and push comes to shove I would rather spend big money on the the Harley and keep my fixer upper Deere.

As always you hit the nail on the head. For my acre, wood land property, a SCUT with a loader and back hoe would be so useful for digging out stumps. I also help with maintenance around our community lake. That just means I'm building more attachments for the 316!

However, I'm a 60/40 guy (driving / fixing) when it comes to tractors. I grew up on a farm so these are little toys compared to what I'm used to. That's probably part of my problem. :p I'd drive tractors around all day if I could. Unfortunately, that doesn't pay as well as engineering! :D

However, when I win the lottery (once I start playing), first stop is the John Deere dealer!

For me its the other way around. I have a basic lawn tractor that is quite a pain to deal with. I want to get rid of it and buy a tractor that I can actually use to mow all the yards I cut. An ideal tractor would be a GX, a 425/445, or an X485/X585. The 4WD could be handy. And those tractors will actually LAST. As for older tractors, I have my awesome 210 thay I plan to keep for my lifetime, and I WANT a 318 because of their reliability and power, and because I have many memories of my uncle's 318 which has become so nostalgic, the sounds, looks, everything. That's something I don't really NEED but it would be good to have.

When I find a career and a house, I'd like to have the aforementioned models, one for each of my kids. And I'd also like a compact tractor for a big yard, and an old 60 (if not my grandfather's) to restore and keep for a long time because that's very nostalgic as well.

It has crossed my mind a few times to buy a low model 2WD X700 series (X700/720) , but I honestly wouldn't need one. I could probably just as well off with just my 332, blade, 3PH, powerflow, and weights. But being me, a tinkerer, I can't. :ROF :ROF :ROF As repeated many times over, I don't have the money either. If I did only have my 332, then I wouldn't have anything to mess with(diesels and hydros last too long!). If you feel like you need to upgrade, then get something in the same series as your 316(318-430).

Diesel, how different is your 332 compared to the newer models. I think a diesel model is something I would at least like own at some point. I know on the farm, we have a John Deere 5575 skid steer and I love the diesel in that thing. Hmmm, a diesel truck and diesel tractor. I'll put that on my 10 year plan!

I need to confess. I did it again. I started looking on auction time at x4 and x5 models. Then I made it worse and looked at past sales and saw a couple of great deals that sold. Then, my buddy bought a beautiful x720 today. .....

Ok. Now I'm good again. For like a month. Lol:rolleyes:

Happens to me pretty much every month. I have an X300 that I bought new in 2010 and honestly it is legitimately too small for the work I have to do. Unfortunately I have had too many other significant projects at the house that has needed my hard earned dead presidents so the upgrade has to wait for now. I figure by next fall I should be able to buy what I need but for now I keep waffling between looking at used X595 and X728 and new X530, X738 and 1026R models.

It's fun to dream while I wait.

The waffling is my worst character flaw as well. The x500-x530 types are out of the question. But an x585/x595 (think I have those right). Wow. But for the money, I could get an old backhoe. Ah, priorities, they are annoying! Haha

Any of you x485/x585 type owners, are models with 2000+ hours starting to get worn out? What's the typical hour range on these?

Diesel, how different is your 332 compared to the newer models.
It uses the same Yanmars as the diesels in the X7s without too many changes. The largest difference is the tranny, its the classic Sundstrand vs the newer TT K92 they've been using since the 4x5 series. Someone can correct me, but everything's the same except the air intake and exhaust. There could be some changes in the cooling system too.

Well....what I really want is a Z900 R, a 1026R FILB and an RSX850i. But that dumb lottery ticket didn't hit the numbers. :hide:

this is why i dont get out much. i see the stuff i want and cannot afford, then get mad:Disgus:

i barely can afford to keep up my junk as it is....to be honest i could actually use a fully dressed 1026R with FEL and Hoe:)

heck, who wouldn't have a good day with a hoe..................:hide:

I play the NEED/WANT game a lot....almost to the point of OCD! I have access to our farm tractors, but that's the farms. the 4210FEL is beat to **** and always in use and everything else is just too big for in town(see avatar). IF I were to make a purchase of what I WANT it would be the smallest model I can put a heated/AC'd cab on, 72" 7iron, Blower, and tiller. everything else I can rent from the Bobcat rental place for attachments I will rarely use. IM trying to get to this point so I have something that will last me to the end. and when im 70+ I can sit in the nice heated cab in the winter moving snow and mow in the AC in the summer... What I need is maybe a push mower or a LA160 at best and a walk behind snow blower and tiller, but im in between right now with a X324 and attachments and homemade cab.

Exactly! Glad I'm not the sucker for green and yellow high end toys around here.

However, as much as I look around and say hmmmm, the only way I could even consider it would be for a AWD and/or diesel. Heck, my $400 G100 has a 25HP and 54" deck. Really, what more do I need......

...don't answer that! Lol

I went and looked at the 1025r tonight!! That's because they don't sell the X748 any longer!! I am right there too... I just know myself to well, I will go trade my x500 in on one that's just how I am.

Okay dreamers. Here is a hypothetical for you.

John Deere x585 + 62" deck + 54" blade. Looks to be in good condition. But, 2,200+ hours.

How much would you pay? How many hours on these bad boys is getting risky?
