hi all,im new here and just hauled in a new to me fourteen hundred series MTD.its complete with mower deck and in pretty good shape, with the exception of the seat but i have a seat laying around the shop.i mainly picked this tractor up for the cast iron big briggs engine for some of my vintage allis/simplicity projects but after looking it over this thing is built very heavy and in good shape i may just keep it around.anyway its easy to trace history and models on some brands like simplicity, cub, wheel horse and john deere but on others like my old bushhog garden tractor,my lawnmaster garden tractor or my old burns garden tractor it can be almost impossible to find info and with the searching i have done on mtd it looks like this could be one of those.i am pretty sure i can get manuals.what i would like to find is a company history and a model history with specs and years they were built.can anyone here give me an idea as to how to tell what year my fourteen hundred series tractor was built?what years did they build them.was the 1200 series the same with a slightly smaller engine?sorry for the long post my family and friends tell me i do a fine job of making a short story long.:fing20:

glad I'm not the only one. I to have an old mtd , its a 69 or 70 1200, very heavy and very strong. I can't find any info on it yet. the engine is no problem, it's just the tractor itself I can't find anything on. going to restore it come spring. If I find any manuals I'll post them.

no Attorney barnabas collins,it looks just like the first pics, heavy cast aluminum front grill and short 44 inch wheelbase, very heavyduty but it has the 5 bolt twelve inch rear wheels, not the 4 bolt 15's.

the old mtd's are great machines. I currently have a 75 990. I used to own a case 444 and the MTD is a much better machine in my eyes. Very heavy duty. Don't part it, fix it up.

mine is a 16hp briggs, cast iron, hydro, cat zero 3 point. Great machine. This is the tractor that I will forever compare all other to. It's a monster!

LilysDad,thats what im lookingfor ,some history.im pretty sure they offered the big back wheel heavyduty gt until at least sometime in the 80's.the old 60's and 70's gt models are tanks, and they were building smaller lightduty riding mowers back then too and they were building them under different names even then.i know they built the old tractors under the names MTD,dayton, farm king,jc penny and columbia.but thats about all i know at this point.i would like more company and model history.

White GT1650 = MTD 990 and looks like an old Field Boss
White GT1822 = MTD 918 has 23*10.5*12 rears, 4sp with Varidrive and again looks like a Field Boss but interestingly is of better build quality than the 990 as in everything seems to be made heavier from the 3pt hitch on, but that could be because it is a new generation tractor..

i went on a trip today to a dealer that has been in business since 64 and has alot of n o s parts from clear back in the 60's and he has about 2-3 acres of several different brands of garden tractors and riding mowers some back to the mid sixties but he is getting older and has started cutting things up with the high price of scrap and after hearing this from him, although i went in search of old simplicity/allis parts,i asked if i could just look at everything.he said sure and if i wanted to buy a few he would make a good deal.well when i got done i asked him to figure what he would take for a square fender jd 112 w/hydro lift,a case 220 w/hydro lift,a late 60's gilson garden mark [just want the rear ags and engine off it,the tranny has issues] and the one i was suprised to find and really wanted:a MTD fourteen hundred series hydro w/hydro 3 point.this fourteen hundred has the 15 inch four bolt rear wheels.{unlike my gear drive fourteen hundred with the 5 bolt 12 inchers].anyway they all need work and are just sitting out in the salvage yard in different states of repair.i will try to get a price from him around midweek next week.btw if anyone is interested he has bunches of stuff, lots of old wheel horses, cubs, lots of 70's simplicity/allis stuff,a 720 allis [the compact], i saw a big anchent 3 wheel rider of some sort, some gilsons,a 60's sears suburban and others...

I got my MTD and my powerking from a guy in a similar situation. I have bought a few things from him, agrifab finish mower, vacuum setup for the ******** rider, otherstuff I can't think of.

He gave me the MTD and the powerking for free. Gives me chainsaws all the time. Just a nice old guy I've known my entire life. I gotta get back over there and see what else he has!

Sounds like you found a gold mine. Wish I was closer.
