My rule when pull starting it to rotate the crankshaft by hand until the magneto snaps. Then wrap the strap and pull.

Someone yelled for me? :)

Not going to solve this debate as I have them both ways. The non-welded ones are easier to align the shroud on.
Huh. Like I keep saying here, you learn something new every day.

I wonder if it was only some years that they made those, or maybe they were non-dunbar tractors, or what. Wierd.

Anyhow RR, if you drill out or otherwise get rid of the bolt that's there and replace it, you should be back in business. Up to you whether you weld it :)

Hey guys could one make a pull strap. I'm thinking a long serpentine belt with a grommet the right size and a handle. I am at work in a warehouse right now I might give it a try if I knew what size that little nub is that the strap hooks on to? I looked in the service manual too. I'll have to get one.
When I was a lad my dad had a Gravely L, the pull strap that came with it new was made of leather, the handle was similar to a piece of pipe split lengthwise. It had a oval hole in it's center that the doubled over strap slipped through and in turn kept in place by a short metal dowel. There was no grommet, just a hole. Leather belting of the correct width can still be obtained at a place like "SamDallas" in Brookfield, Connecticut. It is usually a heavy duty latigo (excuse the spelling, if I'm wrong) Sam used to keep the belting up to about 4" wide, it's glued up at the factory to make the long lengths that are needed to run belt operated machinery. Once cut it is joined together to form the loop with special metal joiners.
