I took yesterday off from work so Michelle and I could take Emma to a Childrens museum in Holyoke Mass. On the way there, I drove past the guys house that I traded my First BG/MS motor too (he has a Sears loader and another Onan model tractor) and I told Michelle, "Man I wish I could get that Loader from him!" then I drove a little further down the road, and saw a pretty good condition Suburban 725 at a garage and I said "Man that is one tractor I really want to get!" - of course, now I was getting funny looks from the passenger seat ... So now I know where I can go to look for a 725 if I so desire- I have no idea of the condition or if they want to part with it, but it may be worth a looksee-
so after we got back from the museum, I took out the SS18 and mowed the grass. I had previously put the origianl DD13 carb back on it before the last time I mowed, and it was running terrific at high throttle, but surging at idle- so I spent 30 seconds adjusting the needles, and voila! it runs PERFECT thorugh all RPM's!
The issue I had with it was under the throttle plate, there are 2 tiny holes- one is where the tip of the idle needle comes into the throat of the carb, and the other one actually is for fuel... The fuel hole is attached to the idle circuit in the carb and the needle allows the fuel to mix with air when you move the needle in and out. I cleaned out the hole with a piece of wire after the carb had soaked in carb cleaner for 2 weeks, and that was the main problem in that carb. Because it had all that green sludge in the carb, it varnished the hole shut and it was not allowing fuel to flow into the throat of the carb regardless of where the idle screw was.
I mowed the yard varying the throttle with no isses whatsoever!
Then I took out Jolene and plowed the hills in my garden flat to prepare for moldboard and tilling. Jolene was running crappy though, snd I fear I need to clean that carb again, or just re-adjust it...
So the sad of the day was that I got all worked up over the 725 I saw and the guy that I know has a loader, and that Jolene was running crappy, BUT the happy was that I got seat time and got my SS18 running perfectly!
