This year we have been hit with an overabundance of Johnson Grass in our pastures and yard. Anybody have a good solution to control this weed?

2,4-d will kill it, as will round up. the only thing is on pasture land you don't want the animals grazing for a set period of time. READ THE LABEL if you go with any chemical, very few are grazing animal safe. very few weed killers are unsafe for humans after they dry, but READ THE LABEL to be sure.

if you want to stay away from chemicals then frequent mowing or getting goats either one will take care of it.

Roundup will kill it and everything else it comes in contact with. That's what I am using now as a spot treatment in the fields, and although it seems to kill it, in 2 weeks up it comes again.

2,4-d seems to just feed Johnson Grass! I have used this product on the 2 acres we mow, and it has done great killing crabgrass, but the Johnson grass is thriving and just crowding out everything else.

Thanks for your input! Any other ideas??

You can cut the Johnson grass down and take heavy plastic on cover that area and it will kill the Johnson grass. You can let it sit for a week or 2 and it will be gone.

Poast herbicide will kill it along with many other grasses. It won't kill broadleaf plants. I use it to get grass out of my blackberries.

The roundup is killing it. You just have more coming up. If you don't want to use chemicals, there are certain times you can mow it and kill it. I have around 25 acres I shred. One year I hit the right stage by accident. The only johnson grass that returned was slowly from seed. The seed will come up for years.

We always made sure our Discs were cleaned off before going field to field. No sense carrying Johnson grass and Shatter cane all over 4 counties.

Hi All, What do I do if I want to kill off the johnson grass and get something more pleasant going? I have 30 acres, full oh johnson and other garbage. Do I cut it LOW just after first frost (or just before)? Cut it low now and then re-seed? I know this stuff is a bear to rid....and I really want to avoid chemicals....we do not have any farm animals, only 2 dogs and my 11.5 month old son.... :)

Sorry to be a bother and to re-open an OLD thread, but any help is much appreciated to this newbie....

Aaron.....
