Yes it's better but not mandatory.

Here how I do mine, I jack the rear of the tractor, I let drain the transaxle overnight and the next day I fill up the transaxle.
I leave the tractor jack up till the next day, add oil if necessary and finally do the purging procedure.

This way the transaxle purge itself by gravity overnight and take less time to do the "active" purging procedure the next day.

I change the oil in the transaxle twice a year.

Got it draining now, I'm not gonna do the overnight thing but was just trying to decide how I'm going to get to that filler neck to refill with that very awkward postilion, also do you refill with the foam filler neck filter in place or leave that out until done, seems like by leaving it in it would take forever to get the oil through it.

I have removed the foam filler neck filter when add fluid. I put it back in the neck when I am done.

1-Katt asked me if it gave that little puff of smoke when I start it and it does but only when cold starting, he asked so this must common for the 26 HP Kawasaki.....Whats up with that?
Last spring when I still had my X540, mine smoked on start up from day one.

One dealer tech explain to me it's the way those Kaw. engines are mounted.
One cylinder is slightly lower which drains a small amount of oil to the lower cylinder on start up.

Personally if I was JD, I'd find a fix fast, because like I wrote here before.

When the day comes you park your X540 out in your lawn to sell, a buyer comes along and wants to hear the engine run, it belches a big puff of smoke on start up, then you say:
"Don't worry, JD says there's nothing wrong and it's normal."

It actually did that when I went to look at it and that's what the owner told me. I wasn't worried because I knew from MTF research they were known to do that, I just didn't know why.

Because god only gave me 2 hands this is what I came up with.

When I changed my tranny oil I used the same type of funnel as you did. Only I used the holes in the back of the fender to hold the funnel. I tilted the seat forward then slide the funnel tube down through one of the holes and then into the reservoir.

I had to stop and make a run to Auto Zone for that funnel, cost me a buck fifty.

Never thought of going through the hole in the fender but I did consider drilling my own directly over the filler neck.

That's for all Kaw''s with the vertical crank. A very smart small engine guy told me, if the piston stops at the back of the bore oil will leak past the rings. He said drive the front up on 4" blocks when done using it and it will stop. worked for me. My GX325 smoked real bad at start up, my X540 does it a very little at start up. Now they don't at all. So none of the experts explained why mine never smokes on start up during the winter ?? It has to have something to do with the freezing weather ?? NO ??
Anyone else notice this too, that snow blows !!
