You can run without one, and have more sticks, rocks, etc. damaging your belts. At nearly $40 per belt, it's a cheap replacement.

Another frequently overlooked source are the large collectors. Guys like Littledeere on here, or 450deeres at WFM. Neither actively markets minor parts like this, but just might have what you need if you ask them.

Also in looking for used parts, accept that you might have to take the next higher assembly to get a deal. A lot of the guys who part these things out don't like to take things too far apart. So you might look for a deal on an entire mule drive with a good cover.

Mine was on Ebay that I bought it. I had to replace mine or take the old off just to get to the belts and see where to adjust belt as mine was so beat up. New one can't get that bad ever.

Oh the irony. Guess who just shredded his PTO belt? (On a Saturday. And the JD dealers are closed)

Grrrrr. Another lesson learned the hard way. On my way to the local auto parts store to get a belt, AND will order the mule cover Monday.

Thanks all.

You can always just make one if you have a couple tools and an hour of time. That is what I plan to do on mine.

Guess im pretty lucky, when I got my 316 with 1180 hours on it, it had a worn primary and secondary belt, I figured Id replace them as needed. at about 1300 hours the primary shredded due to a failed mule pulley. I put on a new Genuine Deere belt and it was still like new at 1800 hours when I pulled the deck to rebuild it, and that old cracked half split secodnary belt was still on it, but ill replace it now.
