I've always hated the quality of the pictures on Craig's List. It's real hard to see any real detail. Last Sat morning I was checking CL for deals and spotted this picture. I saw it was an old G with a 60" and was listed dirt cheap. It was noon and the ad came out about AM. I figured with the cheap price, there would be about two dozen responses, but I sent a quick email. I don't remember what sob story I gave the seller, the kid needs a brain transplant and the doctor wants to paid in Gravelys or the wife is in a Mexican prison and I need and old G to make her bail, but I was kind of shocked when the seller emailed me back that evening and said it was mine.

So anyway, I called the seller and it turns out to be a nice lady, but she doesn't know why it was parked and she's not sure how long it's been parked out in the field. She had no idea of what model it is, and was actually taking a picture of something else in the field and shot the picture of the Gravely. She listed it and didn't expect any response. I told her it didn't mater and I would take it. I asked if she could email me the original picture by any chance, and she said sure. And here I would have been happy with a 16 or an 18 G. I got it home tonight.

Yeah, *really* sharp eyes would've been able to make out the 24G's straight frame rails in that picture. I fear that soon, I will be the only rider guy on here without a 24G of my own. The 24Gs always seem to be beat to death, don't they?

I feel bad for someone who's child needs money for a brain tumor.
And that is bad luck that you did not get a 16g or 18g like you had hoped.
I will pick up the tractor that disappointed you as long as you did not pay over $50.

A big Onan and 72" deck should be worth two get out of jail free cards.

Nice find. Keep us updated - hopefully it doesn't need too much work.

It's pretty rough looking. It's sat out in a field for at least 10 years. The tip of the muffler is rusted off and the muffler appears to have been filled with plant mater. The 4 deck wheels are toast but the big tires all had air in them. I can see the fuel filter has deteriorated and cracked open from sun exposure and the fuel pump in down hill from it. Paint is badly faded and it looks better in the picture than it does in real life. I haven't tried turning over the engine yet, I want to make sure there is nothing obstructing it. I can't get the oil cap/dip stick to open, so I don't know the oil situation. A quick glance didn't reveal any internal engine parts sticking out of the block. Nothing seems to be missing except the battery and the deck belt covers. I think it's a 60" deck, the side is straight up and not rounded. Plus it went on the trailer with inches to spare.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow.

Wow. That's a great find, Ron. You never know what you'll find with CL. Great story!

Great find Ron! Those are the kind of "fooled by's" that you certainly don't mind experiencing!! I'm sure that most took one look at that machine sitting in the jungle foliage and went right on to the next listed tractor. And the bonus is that the paint's so faded, it's almost PINK.

Great find, good luck with it.

I knew it was a 24G right away - the oil filter is a dead give away for the Onan.

That was the first thing that got me wondering. I blew the picture up and tought I could see the dual brake petals. But it also looked like the rear wheel had a weight on it, but it was just rust. That's the problem with fuzzy pictures. You are just not sure what you are seeing.
