I think I am going to switch everything I own over to Amsoil synthetic motor oil. I have heard and been told by many Amsoil is one if not the best oil out there. I believe synthetic is the way to go.

I don't know if I should use 5W-30 or 10W-30 in the Jd 345. I am thinking the 10W-30 year around (heated garage).

Does anyone have an opinion on this??? Does anyone use Amsoil synthetic currently???? If so, I would appreciate your opinions.

It's the absolute best thing you can do for anything with an engine.

Amsoil is excellent, but I use Mobil 1 as it's easier to find.
I change my oil annually, usually close to 100 hours instead of the recommended 200 hours. Would synthetic still be a good idea?

I use motul 300V 15w-50 in the cars, the bike I use amsoil, mobil 1 or motul 300v. 5w-50 and the new tractor I will use JD 10w-40 and will switch over to 15w-50 rotella synthetic or amsoil diesel synthetic. Yea synthetic is worth the $$$. Motul is really a race oil I use in the 911 because I need high ZDDP (zinc) content, the bike shifts smoothest with amsoil so I use it when I can and I think rotella diesel synthetic gets such great reviews and readily available I will use it and when I have an order in with amsoil on the bike I'll pick up a few qts for the tractor. The trick is to let the rings seat so use conventional oil for the first 2 changes which would equate to 50-100 hours then on to synthetic.

After 100 hours I think I am heading to 5w-40 Rotella full synthetic. It seems well liked in oil and diesel forums, works great for my gas engines too, and is about $20 a gallon at Wally World.

I use Amsoil in everything I own also, 10-30 will be fine for you year round. They make an oil specifically for small hot running engines. As far as break in hours I don't think you'd have to wait 100 hours, my last 3 tractors were switched over at 30 hours or less and Iv'e never had a consumption issue.
If you have a lot of vehicles like me (9 gas engines total) it is worth becomming a dealer.

The Yanmar diesel in the X748 gets a 1st oil change at 50 hours. The next one is not scheduled for another 200 hours or annually (it will be annually for me). Based on a recommendation from a trusted source I'm going to go through two 50 hour runs of standard oil for the break in then switch to full synthetic for the yearly changes.

I'm only 18 hours away from the 50 hour oil change!:fing32:

I currently change oil in the spring (SAE 30) and the fall (10w-30). I usually put 30 hours on during the summer and 15 hours during the winter. I know I am changing it more than needed but that's better than not enough. The oil is still very clean looking when it's changed.

I use synthetic oil in everything....

In my red 2011 Ferrari Testarossa
In my powder blue Lear jet
In my custom V-8 454 cu. Boss hoss cycle
In all seven vintage Corvettes

And............... Neah........ just pull'n your chain.:sorry1:

But my wife does let me use Mobil 1 in my X540...........:fing32:

I run synthetic in my x485. changed over at 63 hours and now I have 225 hours.

I am debating changing over to synthetic on my recently purchased 425 with a little over 500 hours on it. Not sure if I will switch over on the 425.

Also, last time I was at my dealer I asked what synthetic would be appropriate for my 2320 diesel CUT. The recommended the JD 0W-40. http://www.deere.com/en_US/parts/partsinfo/oils_and_lubricants/oil_0w40.html

I figure the 5W-40 provides a good spread of winter cold starts (although Herman is in garage) and summer heat (not that hot here now though). It worked great in my ATV all seasons (it plowed in the winter) and in my generator, zero turn (almost sold), power washer, brother's ATV, generator, power washer, truck, nephew's ATV, ...

It is good stuff I have used for years and was happy to see diesel people like it too.

When I had my 345 some years back, I e-mailed John Deere directly one day on using Synthetic oil
because my 345 was a older model.

JD said it was ok on two things:
"Change the oil at regular intervals as recommended and use the oil weight stated in your service manual."

Interesting. Last I had seen the plus-50 it was a blend http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deere-Plus-50-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-0W-40-Quarts-TY24349.html and blends can be as low as 5% synthetic (if memory serves me). That concerned me then but your link says 100% synthetic base. That shoulds different to me. How is it priced?

Right or wrong I figure the spec for the X748 (attached) ranges from 5W-30 to 15W-40. A good 5W-40 should work all the time and at any temp. Change it once a year, use it all year...

I'm using the JD Plus 50 0W-40W in my 2305 and Ingersoll 318LGT with the 18HP B&S gas engine. The oil seems to stay cleaner longer, quicker starts in the winter. slkpk

A different view....
I think it's a waste...
If you keep your oil clean and changed you should never have an oil problem.
And never let your oil get low...
Do this and you wont have a oil problem with your engine.

I have used both Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-30 & now switched over to Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (mowing only, no winter use), and I have found that when I do my oil changes on the 355D the oil is black (sooty) even tho I change it at 50 hours and would be visibly darkened (instead of the bright maple syrup color) only after a few hours of use.

I wanted to know what the thinking of the folks with diesel engines (like 455's) and the newer X(Diesels) on the synthetic's ability for soot control. I am pretty sure the oil's ability to resist heat, acid, and lubrication isn't a issue for Diesel at 50 hours of use. Do you have any concern as far as engine wear from the soot?

I'm used to running my Mobil 1 synthetic on 4runner and draining the oil after 1 year (albeit with only 3-4 thousand miles over that time) looking slightly darkened.. But I know that 4runner 4.7LV8 (Same one use as the landcruiser) is very easy on oil...
