Anyone out there know if the back half of an 8n (early, front dist) will bolt to a 9n transmission?

Are the gaskets the same?

What's different on the 8n lift & controls?

The 8N has the draft/position control and a different hydro pump and linkage..

Yes, I believe the rears will bolt up to a 9N/2N front..

I believe you can. A couple of years ago farmer Dan had ripped a hole in his 1940
9n "Maude" rear end at the pto. He replaced it with a center rear end housing off an 8n. I have also seen fergusons TO20/30 rears bolted up to 9n/2n.

YES, It will bolt up and if you have the pump and top cover you then get position control like Ken said or you can install your pump and top cover some things remain just as they were.

What about the brake pedals? Do I just run the 9s?

my 9 has a sherman (stepup), should I stick with that trans or put my motor in the 8 (it's got a cracked block) - or would the Sherman swap over? I thought I'd heard that you had to swap the output shaft for one of em....

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do.
If 8n has a cracked block you can pull the engine out of the 9n and put it in the 8n. That's probably the easiest.
Your sherman would depend on the countershaft pin. If it's in front then it will hit the brake cross on the 8n, if countershaft is in the rear on the sherman it will fit.

I want to build the best tractor for my use (digging with a slipscoop).

Checking out the 8n it's got all the leaks (axles, pump, 3point arm mounts) that mine's got, & it's steering is shot.

I'm thinking the smart money is on just repairing my leaks & keeping my 9 mostly stock.
