Finally got around to starting to model an idea I have for a support/ repair for my glass nose for my 16/6.

I am thinking of 3 sheet metal parts that should be relatively simple to make with my 2' box/pan brake. The lower part would slip over the lower part if it was still there or in my case, replace what's missing. I haven't put the hinges in the model yet but, you guys wil probably get the idea.

I know the top part as shown will need to be different than this but I thought I would throw it out there for others to look at and comment on.

I'm in rather the same situation. My Ugly ST/16 is missing the lower portion of the upper nose piece. The previous owner fashioned this nifty patch. The original design of this component is flawed. There's a huge twisting moment placed on the fiberglass cross beam when the hood is opened. It definitely needs a reinforcement. I'm considering a 1" square "torque tube" as the base, with flat flanges on the ends to distribute the load into what's left of my side plates.

Went out to the shop and cut out a "test Part" Out of some 18 gauge steel I had lying around, layed out the bend lines according to solidworks. I have a 2' Pexto box/ pan brake that I used to bend it up.

It fit pretty good, I had to file my holes a little bit on the test part and trim a little bit of the fiberglass. I adjusted the holes in my cad file, added a clearance cutout to clear the engine and cut the "Real Part" out of 14 gauge steel. After bending it, it fit pretty nice. Just a couple adjustments with the grinder to follow the radius on the lower part of the nose and it's as good as it is going to get.

It took the cnc plasma a little less than 2 minutes to cut this out with the holes in it.

Tomorrow I will work on the hinges and see how that goes. It seems very stiff with the bends in it.

Here are the pix.

I made the hinge today and welded it up.
I think it looks pretty good and worked ok when I tested it.

Here is a picture of it.

I don't think i will glass it in.That way if there is any flex in the steel (which in testing there wasn't) It won't crack. There is only about a 1/16" between the steel and the fiberglass.

I am pretty happy with it. the whole hood is supported by the metal now and the fiberglass is along for Show. Hopefully I will get the rest of the black painted tomorrow, I ran out of paint and light today.

Now I need some lights!

:fing32: Looks pretty good. You have a lot more header left, than I have. I was thinking about building a complete frame for mine. Thanks to Small Fry I may not have to.

Wow Slow Crawler,
Who stole your nose!?
I just saw a nose sell on ebay for ~$70 last week.

Here is picture of the nose back on the tractor, All Done! Except maybe a piece of screen for the lower section.

Anyone interested in one of these metal parts for their tractor?

That looks marvelous!

:thanku:

I would be interested in buying at least one (maybe more as funding permits)

I have an ST/10 in need of a nose job, and I have a GT-18 that is (so far) still intact.

Please post or PM cost!

I think we are all waiting!!:fing32::fing32::fing32:

Thanks for the interest,
I would like to get $40. plus shipping. The part will come primed with rustoleum.

You will have to cut the lower center section out, I will provide measurements for that. I used a hacksaw and it worked fine.

Thanks for the compliment GT80.

BTW,
The gas we used the other night was 75/25 Argon/ CO2 mix.
I rent my bottle fromm Middlesex gasses.
I have the manual around somewhere for that welder, once I find it I will get it to you.

I have never taken any courses on welding but, I built an automated welding machine at my last job!
