I just bought a Case 444(14hp Kohler) with a few attatchments, the motor was gone through last year and the Garden Tractor is in pretty good shape.
My problem is that it seams to run hot. When you mow with it your feet get super hot and when you shut it down and then restart it, it pings.
I have removed the stock exhaust and replaced it with an external stack to reduce the underhood temp, that helped some but still not it.
The guy I bought it from told me that he thought it was timing(internal). I have checked the timing marks on the cam, crank and balance gears. The only thing that I have found to be out of place is the lower balance gear was 180 out. All covers are in place and it flows air over the head very well.
I checked the keyway under the flywheel to make sure it wasnt partially sheared, it was fine.
Any ideas?
I also had a guy tell me to shorten my point gap from 20 to 16, he claims that it will change the timing enough to keep the GT from getting hot?
