Bolens 800 build

After a year of not working on the Bolens 800 I decided now was the time to get the old beast out of the garage and into the yard working like it should.

Here's the Beginning pictures, basically a complete tractor that was in bad need of repair and a new paint color. I started by tearing the whole tractor down to a rolling frame. The S7d engine was gone, the front bearing and magneto plate were non existant and the case was filled to the gills with stagnant water. I had a S8d donor motor that was ready to rock so I set it aside.
Either way, I have a lot of time and paint, not so much money, but a headache as I am trying to make sure everything is cleaned and repainted.
First the hi-lo lever system had rusted completely tight and the brackets were re welded at some point. I used alot of PB-blaster penetrating spray as this tractor basically sat in a swamp like state.

Here's the past pictures...

Getting up to the current date, the tractor sat in a garage until I got the urge again!....
I realize that there is a big gap from the first pictures until the frame was painted.....I should have taken more pictures! I hate it when that happens! I also dont have a shot of it before I touched it....oh well at least its better now.

The hood is an ebay find. I wanted a good original hood that wasnt dented/rusted/welds broke, like the previous hood.
Really shows how much work I have to do to the rear tubes beside the transmission, I will probably set the tubes up on blocks and remove the transaxle to get to the rust between the tubes. I will detail all the assembly scratches and stuff like that after I get it up and running, I have to rewire all the starting/charging system as is was pretty cruddy after sitting all those years before I came along.

Got the rear wheels off to await the new tires. I am taking the time now to check all the bushings and oil seals, Im trying to stay out of the tranny if at all possible but I would rather know that it is right before I get the motor running. The right hub is rusted to the axle, enough penetrating oil, and maybe some heat will be needed to get it off. The left hand hub and the brass cone for the adjusting nut is also stuck. A little penetrating oil and a couple of taps from a brass mallet got it free. Here's some shots of tonights work.

Worked on the right hub for about two hours this afternoon, I could not get it to budge. I used heat, PB blaster, and a few choice words. Seems the keyway has rusted the hub to the axle. With no real way to hammer the axle or the hub to get it off without possibly damaging both parts or something inside the tranny I am looking into maybe borrowing a three finger gear puller from a friend to try my luck with that. :comp26:

I did get the tires off the rims though, Seems I have a lot of wirebrushing and sanding to do before installing the new tires.

Okay guys, I got the hub off on my lunch break today. I used a two finger gear puller on the hub. It needed some heat and some careful wrench work to make sure the gear puller didnt slip off, since there is no center hole to hold the puller in place.
I would normally leave the rusted hub on and just let it work loose after the tractor is ran for a while. The reason I needed the hub to come off or at least move is so I could do the rear end adjustment as it had a fair amount of end play.
Now I can look at the parts diagram to see if the left hand hub comes off on the Bolens 1000 six speed tranny it comes right off, I wanted to check the oil seal on that side and replace as necessary.

More as the story unfolds.... :00000060:

Got the hubs off and cleaned up, I am now working on finding the seals, I have a local bearing shop trying to find the tranny oil seals. Seems they are having a hard time finding the oil seals. Are these seals hard to find NOS? Thanks

Have new pictures will upload this afternoon.

If you cannot find them locally very easily, I think you might have some luck ordering the seals through Sam's Bolens http://www.samsbolens.com He has a fair amount of NOS pieces from buying out dealers, and is usually very responsive.

Got the oil seals, now I need to paint the tranny and pull the old seals, any tips or do I need any special oil seal pullers?
As you can see that the inside of the tranny is gummed up pretty bad. I will probably run the tranny for a while and then drain and refill and repeat. I dont think there are any heavy metal pieces I took the bottom plate off a year ago and drained all the gunk. I then added fresh fluid to keep everything coated. I dont really know what to check inside the tranny, the roll pins on the shifter rails feel tight, the main diff gear is worn but I think it will adjust out nice. Anything else to look for, know about the endplay of the worm gear but it feels okay.
I didnt see any heavy brass particles when I drained the fluid the first time.
We will see how it all works when the tractor is used for the first time!

Okay guys, I got more work done this weekend. I got both hubs painted, the lugnuts painted, and mounted one wheel to see what it'll look like. I still have to remove the entire tranny and clean between the tubes and get it all painted back up. Here's the pics.

Looks great! Thanks for the pictures! I'm curious where you got those rear tires? They look brand new and I didn't know they still sold the old orginals any more, pretty cool! :thThumbsU
