So I've been working on the 6277 and keep reading about the large washer btwn the blade and the stiffener.

The 6277 didn't have one of these washers, but the diagram does show one, so...I put one in from another mower.

Perhaps the blade is permanently bowed from not using a washer, because it's not contacting the riased bits at either end of the stiffener.

Also, while installed without the washer, the tips of the blade were just about even with the bottom edge of the housing/deck, with the washer it's still about the same.

Lastly, when all is installed, the blade nut doesn't quite thread all the onto the crankshaft. I'd say it's shy about 1/2-2/3 the thickness of the washer

Can anyone comment on these findings?

I don't understand why the stiffener is made the way it is, if it isn't meant to bow (preload?) the blade.

Thanks,
Coop

Hey Coop sounds like you have some bad threads on the crankshaft, take a 5/8"-18 die and run it the entire length and get those threads cleaned up and that should cure your problem. I think that once the blade is tight and run down against the washer (.065 inch shim) everything else will fall in line, the blade will contact the stiffener nubs and it will have the proper curvature so that your blade tips will be safely up into the deck. If you go to the thread that I started yesterday titled "7022 Vibe Fixed" there is a picture of the setup required and yes your mower is a 21 inch so the washer (shim) is required.

After further review it also sounds like your blade is bent, you will need to replace that blade or if you have a tricut blade laying around you can just install it directly to the blade adapter and do away with the stiffener and washer (shim) all together. The Tri-cut blades are formed from the factory to provide sufficient stiffening without the use of a seperate stiffener.

Note: if the crankshaft threads cannot be saved I have one you can have that came off the 5024 in my Avatar, it is a good crank I just upgraded to the dual bronze bearing crankcase and was afraid the roughness in the lower end would hamper the bearing surface and prevent a good seal so I installed a NOS crank. If I am not mistaken you used a single bronze bushing crankcase on your commercial, not that it makes a big difference since they are 2-way interchangable.

Indy 452, I think it's pretty straightforward, but maybe I'llget pics on the weekend. The mowerr's put away now.

LB77, maybe the washer I selected is too thick (it came off a C, it was already apart and seems about 1/8").

The threads on the crank are fine, otherwise I have 3-4 NOS D cranks here already.

I'll tear the blade off another 21" to see what's there.

Yeah, 1/8 inch is way too thick, once again you need .065 inch.

After rereading I may have misunderstood you about the nut not threading down all the way. I think maybe you were saying that with the nut torqued and properly seated there were no threads visible on the bottom side of the nut. If this is the case then that extra thick washer was probably the culprit.

DOH!

Um, yeah. So, it's a tr-cut blade I've been using all along. Didn't strike me until I saw a Tri-Cut blade on ebay.

That's why the 8239 doesn't have the adapter.

I knew this too, because I read about blades a few weeks ago, and how the adapter bends flat blades to keep them from flapping.

The wording on the box indicates that the washer and stiffener are NOT used. Other posts here say it is optional, but the blade box says NOT to use the stiffener

I dunno Coop, I don't recall anyone stating that the stiffener was optional on the tri-cut, as far as I know, all posts that I have read on here stated that with the tri-cut blade you do away with the stiffener and washer. It's all good now though right, just got to get to the bottom of that fuel leak.

The 6277, 6279, 10600 and 22240 all came to me with the tri-cut blade installed with the stiffener.
