I have two old Craftsman tractors, GT6000 in avatar and a DYT4000 and a 50" GT3000 mower deck. Does this stuff have enough value to get someone to pick it up and haul away for "free". I ask because I see an advertisement on Craigslist offering to pick up such stuff for free. In my case neither tractor runs and would have to be manhandled to get on trailer. I plan to call the number in the add, but decided to get some input form someone who has such an experience

Now is a bad time because of the quarantine....but if you wait until fall...see if your local high school shop class can use it for a learning project....I know it is done where I live....besides, although there are scrappers out there....it is way down...less than a nickel a pound...and remember 2 things ...you are going to get old some day too.....you don't want t be just discarded....that and an old tractor is a terrible thing to waste 😁

Have always had problems trying to get rid of "free" stuff. And to make sure someone that can use it, gets it I put a price on it. Started that when I had five 20" bikes that I had plans of using the wheels and chains for a project that never found time or motivation to do. Put them out front with free sign. Nothing after a week. Took them off lawn for couple days and then back out with $40 for all. Guy stops next day with couple kids and asks if I would take $25. I said sure, kids were jumping up and down, happy to have them. Two of the bikes worked great and the others, well could get enough for another one, maybe two. Loads them up, and starts to take out the money. Told him never mind, just glad to see them going to someone who would use them instead of scrapping them. Couple weeks later, I'm out front doing some trimming and the same guy stops by with a six pack. Here. thanks for the bikes. Kids are having a ball.
Why scrappers never picked them up? Well probably cause junk yards, because of recycling fees, charge a per tire fee to take something in that has tires. With the bikes, the small amount of weight, not worth it.
So now just like a flea market, I put a small price tag on everything which tells folks it has value and most stuff moves quickly. People that can use, or need, stop. And getting folks to stop is the key. Scrappers go on by. I know, there are always folks that will make up a story, but what the heck, if they go to that trouble then so be it. All I know is that it gets stuff out of my way.

Never had a problem getting rid of stuff where I live. Put something down at the end of your driveway on Saturday morning and it's usually gone before early afternoon, sometimes takes until Sunday, even old toilets, but pretty much everything I have put down there on a Saturday morning has been gone by the end of the weekend.

The first day after we had closed on buying the house we were gutting the bathroom to get it renovated before we moved in, and the old toilet was behind the back porch, which is pretty hard to see from the street out front, but an old guy in a little Toyota pickup truck pulls into the driveway and asks if we're getting rid of the toilet, and would it be OK if he took it. We said sure, go ahead. It was pretty nasty in terms of old rust stains, and the flush handle was completely missing. There was a string coming out of the hole where the handle used to be that was attached to the flapper valve. And he was mumbling to himself about what great shape it was in the entire time he was loading it into his truck. One person's junk is another person's treasure I suppose.

Great! Why don't I get email notices of activity on a post I started???

The 2005 DYT4000 has an 18 HP one cylinder that was on its second head gasket, this one provided byi Brigs and Stratton for free a clear indication they know they had a bad design. Well, still usable and I was on the first hundred hours on the new head gasket (expect to get at least 100 hours given the faulty design) when a hurricane came up from Florida and put a Pine tree across the seat of that tractor, breaking the rear (LT tranny) axel, damaging the seat and steering wheel, all easily seen. I put it aside and moved on. It is of some potential value. The other a 1993 GT6000 has about 1,500 hours on it and burns some oil and slight damage from the same storm. I put it aside when I purchased a 46" PYT9000 (The GT is only 44").

I'll consider trying to find home, I too get attached to machines, and dogs, yes and people.

Other problem I have on this site, the editor for typing this post will not allow me to use the mouse to position the curser.

Would you care to post a picture of your garage/back yard area? You sound as bad as me.

Wow. And I thought I had troubles! Good thing I don't have a large garage or backyard.

Yeah I've never had any problems getting rid of stuff I no longer want. Larger stuff like trucks, trailers and boats I just post on Craigslist for $20, title in hand, and they're gone that day. And where I used to live (rental house, not so great neighborhood) I could get rid of little stuff like crappy lawn tractors, grills, anything scrappable by just putting them out front. Some crackhead would see it and have it loaded and gone within 15 minutes.

I'm "fortunate" enough to have family members that don't take care of their stuff and just offer to give it to me just to get rid of it. I've gotten several cars and various lawn and garden equipment things just from my older brother. This year I received a Troy Horse tiller and a decent Lawn chief (MTD) rider. Both had issues from being left outside all winter, but very repairable. But from what I see on FB Marketplace and Craigslist listings pretty much anything repairable has some value and if priced accordingly, will sell. Broken but complete and repairable riding mowers usually fetch $100-150, and there are a lot of folks who repair and resell them as a hobby.
