After blowing snow last night and pulling wood this weekend, I've had enough! The stock muffler has got to go in lue of a more efficient, quieter, free'er flowing muffler! My ears are still ringing! It didn't seem loud but it is!
Stay tuned for "The Muffler Job" :fing20:

I'm all ears Keith.

Going to round up materials this weekend, I think I am going to make an entirely new muffler/header arrangement for it, seems everything else is custom on this tractor , why stop now LOL.

Sounds like a good idea.

Well now , today we are going to start on the muffler project, I think I have all the goodies I need for the body, all I need is to make the header pipes up, this is going to be the tricky part, when I have it all finished I should have a 3d drawing of it too. Stay tuned .... pics soon.

My Jac 1650 has an highly efficient stock muffler. Yours must have gone bad?

Nope, mine has a twin 18hp opposed Briggs in it, not the 16hp Kohler single(was missing when I got the tractor)

Oh yeah, forgot that.

But that makes it only quasi stock then :).

:MTF_wel2: Jacobsen1650 I'm sorry I didn't see you are new here,:MTF_wel2:
Sweden ? That's were my grand folks came from :fing32: Welcome to MTF
Do you have a lot of grass to mow over there?

I don't have enough:).
Before this winter I bought a Simplicity 9020 with a 60" deck so it will be quick mowing next summer.
Right now I'm in the middle of o snowstorm waiting to get out and chew the 30" drifts with the 1650 and one stage thrower.
We haven't gotten any much snow the last ten winters, so when I put the thrower on last autumn it was more for testing.
No regrets about that!
The C-160a wich I usually have a blade on sits behind the barn. Didn't even get the deck of it before it was snowed in.
I also have two more 1650's which is going to make one good.
And another C-160a.
1/3 of the Swedish population migrated to Amerika.
One of my ancesters took one s out of Johansson to make it Amerikaized 'Johanson' so im prepared:). Most of my migrated relatives later changed to Johnson.
Do you know where your's lived i Sweden?

Not sure I just know that they owned the largest match making factory in Sweden in the late 1800's early 1900's. Andersson was the last name.
.

Keith. one question. Doesn't a header setup and free flowing mufflers actually make the engine louder? I am of course considering if the stock setup was in good shape. I know on my big 16 hp Tec, the stock muffler is shot so it is loud as all heck.

On my Caprice with 350 LT1, one of the things was it was made for old folks so they added stuff to keep it quiet. I know when you remove that junk and install a freer flowing exhaust, the exhaust sound gets louder and deeper. That is kind of the point. Nothing like a 5000 pound small block Chevy four door boat that can eat Ricers for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Back to the topic. I will be watching this thread and would be interested in your drawings because I have an opposed twin I am going to be playing with soon. :thanku:

Header pipe I am refering to the pipes from the engine to the muffler,I am going to try and keep them as large and free flowing as possible. Same with the muffler, large volume for expansion of gasses yet reverb baffles to keep things quiet.
I'm going to work on it now ,so should have a few pics tonight..

Well got the muffler body built and managed to get it mounted to the tractor temorarily to see if it helped... well it helped in the response department but actually made it louder:duh: I need to do a few more tweeks so I think I can get it quieted down a touch more with an insert . Stay tuned pics coming up.

Well my muffler works pretty well so far, though not perfect because of the stack. At low to mid throttle she has a pretty sharp bark but at full song, she is very pleasing as now you can actually hear the engine and the snow blower!
Still hear the exaust note but not nearly as bad.
I was in a rush to get the thing finished because we a re expecting a foot of snow (yeh right!) tomorrow, I'll take a few pics when I can and get some drawings of the baffle that made it much quieter.
