Part of planning my dream barn was to spend countless hours on here looking at other peoples barn builds.
I found it very helpful and at least entertaining. With that in mind -- I offer my barn build thread.

Please be patient as it is going to go very slow with me mostly working on it as a one man show. Evenings and Sundays are my limits of available work times.
(I have this other thing I do all called a Job or I would be much more limited on funds :) )

So this barn of mine really lives only in my head, so I don't have a plan to share other than a narrative.

I want a 24 X 30 barn with an 8' lean to on one side; all enclosed.
I do not want posts in the ground that could rot - even past my lifetime.
I will use scissor trusses to get high interior clearance.
I will use normal trusses for the first 8' over the O/H door to create a storage loft as that space is lost anyway when the door is open.

No, I'm not an engineer; but I did get my post base plan approved, permitted and passed inspection prior to pour by the local authority having jurisdiction.

Now for some pics....

as stated - I didn't want posts in the ground.
So I came up with this. Based on the post bases you can buy and looking at a couple designs, including the simple bolt down kind.
I bought some 1/4" x 5" steel plate.
cut it into strips and began drilling for nails and bolts.

I found a gallon of oil based metal paint at the local Atwoods on clearance for $8 so I grabbed it to paint up my plates.

When I got home and opened it to find it was Ford Blue - I knew things were going my way:thThumbsU

I paid a local excavator to level my pad and import 3 loads of shale.
Once the pad was ready, I drilled the piers and put in the cages. Then tied a small mat on top and set my bases. The plates each have 2 rebar hooks through the bottom two holes and down int the piers.

The first picture I posted shows the pad after inspection ready to pour. WWF was added during the pour. I didn't put it in 'till then so the concrete truck wouldn't have to drive on it.

At this point, I've been working on it for about 3 months.
Pretty much evening only as work has been ridiculous.

Finally, the day came for the slab pour. I hired 3 guys to help me, as 26cy is a little out of my league by myself.

These guys were great help and really knew what they were doing.

I wet the slab down every couple hours until dark, then it rained most of the night and all through the next day.
Perfect for a good wet cure !:00000033:

Didn't get to work on much for three weeks, then got a whole weekend off !:thThumbsU

I got 12 of the posts made up (laminated 3 2x6's together - glued and nailed) and stood and got up a few top truss carrier boards.
REALLY felt like a productive weekend.

Another great Sunday in October and I had some help show up to help me set trusses.
Two of my sons and son-in-law came and we got almost 1/2 of the trusses up and braced.

Great help and a fun day with the boys!
This is now as far as I am as of Mid October...

Great work!

Following thread.....:fing32:

Very nice! Looks like it will be a really nice shed when you are done with it! I helped my brother in law build one this summer, and there is a lot of satisfaction to be had with building it yourself!

my avatar pic is a storage shed I built in '06'.. a guy in my former work place draftin dep't made a set of prints of every board in it.. all I had to do was cut all the angles the same.. the buildin is 14 x 20 (front) & 12 tall.. (I scaled the original barn I tore down)

now the interestin thing is I used recycled lumber from that barn.. I brought home 2 x 6's that were 22 1/2 feet long after I cut them down with a chain saw.. that lumber was Minnesota Red Pine.. (the lumber Paul Bunion & Babe the Blue Ox cut..) at the end of the framing I bought 8 brand new 2 x 4's 8 foot long for the project..

there is no posts in the middle of the shed.. the upper part is held up by the front & back walls..

That's not just 'OK', that's awesome!

I think the "OK" is for Oklahoma :)

I like how you did the posts. Keep your ideas coming. I want to build an animal barn with gravel floor and your post idea is great.

Your avatar barn is what I am wanting to build with a second floor for hay storage just like yours. Could you give me some more dimensions? I am thinking each lean to side would be 10ft and the middle tall part either 12 feet or 10 feet. Side walls start out at 8 feet. Not sure how to join roof to tall part and how tall middle should be.
