I recently picked up a Jacobsen GT14 hydro for $100 with two decks and a 48" blade for parts. I decided I like the hydro and the 14Hp compared to my Jacobsen gt10 k241 tractor so I got the motor running. It runs strong and seems to have good compression, but when starting it and when I open the throttle it makes a loud chirping sound like when the plug fires. What could that sound be? It's only when quickly increasing the engine speed and seems like only a few revolutions.

Its definitely not a starter noise. I can turn the engine by hand, and feel the compression. It does it most notably when starting, it sputters and then starts right up. I think it sounds like it might be coming from the carb or the vent, maybe the intake valve is leaking... but I can feel the compression when I turn it by hand and it doesn't seem to disappear suddenly like I would expect if it was leaking compression. Maybe the reed valve in the vent is messed up, but I don't know. I only made sure there was oil, gas and a spark and got it running. I didn't do anything else to it yet. The best way I can describe it is it sounds like a puff of air escaping through a very tiny opening. It doesn't happen when turning it over with the coil disconnected, or when it's running at a steady RPM. It sounds like it's only when there's combustion. I guess I will probably just pull the head and take a look around inside.

I'd guess a blown head gasket, warped head,or a crack in the head ...my HH120 Tecumseh made a "chirp" or "tweet" sound when cranking it over when it had a blown head gasket..once it started it went away, but it had low power and you could tell it wasnt getting full compression..it also smoked worse before I replaced the gasket, which I never could understand,I figured it would smoke more with higher comepression, and more blowby, but I guess not !..

You win. :thThumbsU I went to take the head off to look at the inside and the gasket and found the head bolts didn't feel that tight, I pulled the head and found a pristine condition .020 piston in there and relatively clean valves and no carbon, and still some hone on the walls. So this motor was rebuilt fairly recently. The head gasket looked fine and the cylinder head looked fine. So I put it back together and torqued the head bolts. I fired it right up with no noise. If it starts chirping again then I know I need a new head gasket.

u r supposed to re-torque the head bolts after it has been run long enuf to get up to operatin temp.. let it cool off & re-torque then..

I know... I didn't rebuild it. I bought the tractor as a parts tractor recently and got the motor running. It has been sitting for years.
