Z920 a zero turn crank no start

Purchased a 202/ z930a with kohler cv742 engine. Drove it around did fine. Did have a weak battery and know that. Trailer it home, unloaded, started and ran fine. Left a small trickle charger on it overnight. Went to start it today and spins fine but no start. Starting fluid gets a little smoke and almost hits, but nothing more. Put in new plugs but no difference. Pulled carb and looked in bowl and very clean. When I turn switch I hear a light click I believe to be fuel solenoid retracting. I do notice there is a secondary module on carb I am unfamiliar with. Thinking I need to pull carb again and look deeper. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would start with fuel flow to the carb, before digging into the carb itself, by disconnecting the fuel line from the carb and seeing how the fuel flows to it.

But given it doesn't start on starter spray, perhaps examine how the old spark plugs look, check what kind of spark you are getting. Perhaps the engine is flooded?

Fuel is getting to carb bowl. Not sure if solenoid is allowing it to be sucked into engine. When I pulled carb off it dumped gas out. Also drained some gas looking for water and did not see any. Just puzzled how it ran fine yesterday and not today. Only 25 hours on engine. Does design of carb allow starter fluid to be sucked in intake of solenoid not operating?

Maybe it runs fine w hot, but doesn't when cold. Something like the choke not fully closing can do this, as well as intake leaks. I feel the motor for heat when I go to buy a used machine, to see if the owner's been running it to make it work better, vs just firing up cold.
The fuel solenoid on the carb generally just plugs the main jet, the idle jet will still let fuel through.
Some dirt in the float pin will hold it open and flood the engine, even if some hasn't made it past the pin into the bowl.

The only thing you did between when it was running then not running, was the trickle charger. Are you sure the key switch was off while charging? Might the key switch be leaking voltage back into the ignition system? I'd first verify that you are still getting good spark on both cylinders. If so, then move on to diagnose other possible issues.

It should run for a few seconds with the starter fluid. The choke and throttle should be open for this test. If it hasn't been mentioned yet, check the flywheel key to make sure it hasn't been damaged. The starter fluid test will work even if the carb solenoid is not working.
