I never did get starter out in one piece but here is what I did.
1. Take off.plate in front of flywheel. Only one top bolt on each side; easy to remove.
2. I took off oil filter and oil sending unit for easier access.
3. Disconnect two large nuts and the plug in wire on the solenoid.
4. Remove the two bolts that hold starter on (the bottom one I could not get out at this time but take off the nut.
5. Remove the two long bolts that hold the starter together.
6. Carefully separate starter; don't lose the 3 small gears on the reduction starter gears.
7. Should be able to wiggle out the solenoid, then the starter.

Reassebly is similar. Here are some tips.
1. Put the solenoid on the gear reduction unit before you put in tractor. The solenoid must hook over the plastic lever inside so just make sure you get it hooked. Once properly hooked, the solenoid won't be able to pull out of the gear unit unless you lift it up. Bolt the solenoid to the gear reduction unit.
2. Should be able to put gear reduction with solenoid in the tractor. Don't bolt up yet.
3. Put the 3 gears in the gear reduction unit.
4. Put starter on the gear reduction with the two long bolts.
5. Bolt the gear reduction to the engine. Note: I put the bottom bolt in from the front to make future removal easier.
