Friend just called me and gave me a tractor. Went to look at it and it has the hood of a 314-8 and appears to be that. I checked the ser.# on Toro site and it comes up a C-160. Any ideas.

The number on the plate and it appears to be original is 71-16KS01 - 1246

Motor has been replaced but it currently has a Kohler 14HP Spec 60424 K321S

Will try to get some photos up later.

The 71-16KS01 is a 1977 C-160 Auto and the low serial likely makes it built in 1976. There should also be a 4 digit Julian build date on the plate starting with a 6 for 1976. The S stands for Sundstrand hydro transmission.

The 60424 Kohler spec was used on the 1985 314-8 and 314-A tractors. The 314-A uses a 700 Eaton transmission. That engine should have a dual charging system - a 3 amp rectified but unregulated system to charge the battery and a second stator winding that supplies AC current for the headlights only. The lights will only work with the engine running and the higher it revs the brighter the lights.

Thanks Gquest . After the SN is number 1246. Would that be Dec 4th 1976

The 1246 is the serial number. Dec 4, 1976 would be a Julian date of 6339 (339th day of 1976)
The earliest date I have seen for a 1977 tractor is 6296 October 22, 1976 a Friday.
Usually the model number "71-" is painted on, "16KS01" is stamped, the "-" is painted followed by the serial number stamped. The next line down has the Julian date stamped.
