MF1723 PTO help

My husband and I just bought a used 2020 MF1723 and have noticed that the rear and mid PTOs are linked. Is there a way to engage the rear PTO independent from the mid PTO? All the videos/info online says that they we should be able to use each separately OR together. They shouldn’t be connected but ours seems to be. When he moves the rear PTO handle, the mid PTO handle moves too. What’s the point of 2 handles if they are joined? The guy we bought it from says that it’s the way it works, but everything online is contrary to that. Any insight? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply Mark! And confirming that they are supposed to work independently. Unfortunately it doesn’t work as both PTOs are physically joined together (see pics). This baffles me why it’s like this! It makes NO SENSE for practical purposes at all! Are these able to be ‘unjoined’? What does your look like?

I was suggesting to check that the lever can pivot on that shaft, without turning the shaft itself, as that shaft appears to be connected to the other lever.

Perhaps they are rusted together, or someone assembled them wrong, so when the bolt holding them together is tightened, the lever and shaft (so both levers) wind up rotating together instead of independently.

Oh my goodness you guys are extremely helpful! THANKS to both of you! It’s much appreciated. Ours is definitely stuck…no movement on that bolt. Hubby will loosen and I’ll let you know how he makes out. As long as we know it’s SUPPOSED to move at that bolt then that’s such a huge help!

You say that when you move one lever, the other goes with it...so it has to be pivoting on that point...If the linkage is stuck on something else it won't pivot...and even if it did pivot, it should not take the other lever with it, do you actually see a direct mechanical or structural piece connecting both of the PTO levers on your tractor?
That’s too much work Mark! Thank you though. You helped by telling me that yours moves at that bolt. No need to take your tire off. Will keep you posted if loosening doesn’t work. Fingers crossed…
I have the tools to do it...and I am curious to look under there any way...taking the tire off is going to make it a lot more accessible

I don’t think it’s stuck on anything physically but I think it may be rusted up or too tight so that it’s not rotating around that shaft where dave_r circled in the pic above. He’s removed the bolt but noticed that when the bolt is removed, the part that I have the arrow to doesn’t move at all. I suspect it’s supposed to move. That’s the lower lever. Hes added penetrating oil and will leave it overnight.

If you do get to taking the wheel off, please let me know if yours moves or not. Thanks!

In your first post you mention that when you move one handle...the other handle goes along with it....so it has to be pivoting on that point...I am not sure if that whole shaft should turn ...or just the lever rotating on the shaft...it can't move without pivoting there...unless I am really missing something

...So the shaft does turn when the rear mount is moved...the mid mount should not turn that shaft...it should be free on the shaft

Yes that’s correct. Both handles move at the same time. So both are moving together & pivoting together on that area with the yellow arrow. The horizontal shaft in that pic is the rear PTO. And I feel that that vertical bar where the arrow is pointing exactly at, is supposed to move around that bar for the mid PTO to work independent from the rear PTO. Right now, it seems like they are stuck together and they’re all pivoting together at that point as opposed to independently. That’s what I think is happening.
