LX178 Battery Light stays on when running?

It’s been one thing after another with my 26 year old LX this year. Got the fuel issue fixed thanks to Cannon51. Then the plastic hood hinge broke off...used bondex to repair that. Yes I know it will probably not be a lasting repair but it works for now. So now the battery light started staying on. This issue may have started when I forgot to reattach the headlight wires. They were dangling under the tractor still attached to the heat shield and I forgot about them and drug the heat shield about 15 feet in reverse before I noticed. So maybe I loosened a connection somewhere.

The battery tests at 12.46 volts when off and 14.06 volts when running. If connections seem okay would this more likely be the voltage regulator, or possible the flywheel alternator. I don’t have a shop manual so not even sure if there is a fuse involved. Any thoughts on how to best approach this would be appreciated.

If you have a 6 pin connector voltage regulator, it controls the battery light and the control circuit in the VR has most likely gone bad.

That assumes your battery and stator are good which seems to be the case given your voltages.

Sounds like the voltage regulator needs replaced. I see the genuine Kawasaki is about $100 USD but eBay and Amazon have knock offs for about $25 dollars. Anyone have any experience with the generic VR.

I still have the regulator off my LX178. Let me know if your interested in it. As far as the aftermarket stuff, I've used a lot of Chinese coils and voltage regulators on my Kohlers. Never had one to fail. The battery light stays on about half the time on my GT235. I used to check it with a volt meter when it happened and it was always 14+ volts. Now I just ignore it.
