I have moved tensioner all the way to either side and it still moves with. clutch in. I'm sure I have the belt on correct v to v pulley flat to flat pulley. the belt is loose as it can get still but when I put in gear it keeps moving.. I have to manually pull back to. neutral in order to stop. is there a diagram of that drive belt and tensioner here anywhere?
By any chance did you compare the length of the new belt, to the old belt? You say the belt gets loose, but *something* has changed.
Either:
- the new belt is meaningfully shorter than the old one, and therefore still too tight
- it's routed differently somehow
or
- maybe the brakes aren't working right.
But it seems to me like it has to be one of those.
I don't have a lx172 mine is a lx176 with hydrostatic transmission, don't get on here very often so if I am in the wrong place please let me know, I forget how I did things last time. My problem is that the transmission quit go in reverse then by the time I got it back from mowing and went to put in garage I had to push it in, the oil is full so I thought the transmission is toast, the mower actually belongs to a friend that just passed away and I am mowing 3 yards for the widow, would appreciate any help I can get since I have never worked on a hydrostatic. Thanks
dotson46, I think you'd be better off creating your own thread in this forum. Your problems sounds different than what jimjones71 is seeing, so it will complicate the discussion, trying to sort them both out in a single discussion thread.
(But if it won't go forward or backward, I'd start by checking the drive belt tension, when you've let off the clutch/brake pedal. If that belt is slipping a lot, you'd have trouble moving at all)
I am sorry that I did wrong but I don't remember how to do all these things since I am very seldom on anymore but do appreciate your info I will check on this and if need be will try to start my own thread, Thanks for your help.
No problem. At the top of this page, it shows forum that you're in. Ending with "Lawn and Garden Tractors By Brand", then "John Deere". We're in the John Deere forum.
Once in the John Deere forum, you'll see a button for "Post New Thread", near the upper-left of the page, above the list showing all the different forum threads.
If you click on that, you can post your own discussion thread, which would make it easier for people to try and help you out.
Welcome to the forum! I would start by checking that the blades are off, the parking brake is fully engaged, and that all safety switches are working.
With it being unwilling to run the starter, and having no spark, maybe it considers that a safety condition is not being met. Like it thinks the blades are engaged, or it thinks the brake pedal is not depressed, or that you are not sitting in the seat.
I have a John Deere LX172 won't start or do anything when I turn the key. If anyone can point me in the right direction on what to check it would be highly appreciated.
