JD 317 differential issue

I bought a JD 317 with blade to use for snow removal. The engine blew ( I guess it threw a rod -- I'm not much of a mechanic, but there is now a hole in the side of the engine block). I realize this will make vintage tractor lovers cringe, but I went cheap and practical and mounted a Predator 459 engine in its place. I got it lined up, bolted in, and turning the shaft just fine. The problem is that it now won't engage the power to the rear wheels. I took the back body off, and cleaned up the two buttons that the disengage knob touches, so they move freely. At this point, there is a faint whirring sound when slide the lever for forward or reverse, but movement.

I'm hoping someone can diagnose and/or give an idea of next steps. Everything was working fine for an few hours I would spend few hundred at a mechanic shop if I had reason to think it was fixable at a decent cost. It doesn't seem like it should go to the scrap yard, yet, but......

If the "hydrostatic release knob" is the knob near the seat that says to rotate one way to operate and the other to push manually, then yes, it is set for operation.

The linkages from the lever are all working.

"Assuming proper rotation" might be assuming too much. The engine turns the driveshaft freely and smoothly, but I don't know if I was supposed to check anything else??

Did you remove any of the hydraulic lines at all? I'd be tempted to raise the rear end off the ground and then operate the hydro control to see if the wheels will turn. Might just be some air in the line and that should bleed it.

Odds are the pump is okay. Some people have connected a heavy duty electric drill to turn the transmission input shaft for testing.
Engines basically all turn the same direction, so it's not like you can find one that turns the other way. What you can do is turn the engine you have the other way. You would need a drive adapter made for your engine that bolts to the other end.

1969140 nailed it. I have a honda 630 mounted on my 318. The big long keyed shaft goes out the front for the PTO. The flywheel side of the engine faces back. I have an adapter that bolts onto the flywheel. I do not have a pull cord like you, so that would need to go. Is that a starter motor on the side? If so, you still have hope.

There are adapters you can buy. Do a google search. Then double check with the vendor that it will fit your engine and shaft.
