How to Remove the 990 Brake Disk?

mraroper,

Sadly, no one has answered this yet. I was hoping that someone else had the same problem with their brake as I'm having, and it sounds like maybe you are, too. When I engage the brake, it stops the disc, but not the wheels. I remember that someone else on here had the same problem, and the answer was that the key may have sheared off. Ok, well - I can't find a keyway on there anyplace. Chagrin replied that it's on the back side of the disc. I looked as well as I could on the back side and can't see anything. I certainly hope that I don't have to tear the whole rear end apart just to get at this.

Today, I removed the rear wheels (going to get new tires tomorrow anyway) to get a better look at the brake assembly. I totally remove the brake assembly, but still can't see anything. There is a slot cut into the face of the disc, but I can't tell if there's anything in there. Shouldn't be, because that part doesn't join the shaft. Looked in the manual, but it's not very clear as to where anything is.

Maybe someone will come to our rescue!

:goodl: with your's!

Chagrin,

Thanks ever so much for the photos! Sure wish they had better pics in the repair manuals.

Anyway, couldn't wait to get home and check mine out. The slot is evident, but it doesn't appear as though there is a key in there. Kinda hard to see from the back side - not much room. For whatever reason, mine looks a little different from yours - well, ok - your's is a teeny bit cleaner.

Anyway, :thanku: for the photos - you saved the day!

I already HAVE a manual for my tractor - all it shows is an exploded parts view - that does no good! Chagrin provided the most help by just snapping a photo. The manuals should have had more photos, but then again, it's an Owner's Manual and not a repair manual.

I'm wondering what is on the other side of the brake's shaft that could be slipping. Could be a sheared pin or key there. The disk spinning on the shaft outside is a sheared key there.. If not--- It's inside the transaxle..

Sorry I tried to help..
You're right - it could be something inside the transaxle, but by the exploded view in the MTD 990 manual, it's very hard to tell just exactly where the parking brake connects. I'm going to clean up the disk enough to see if there's a key or not. If not, I'll get the disk loose, take it off and clean it well. Then I'll replace everything, including a new key, and see if it works like it's supposed to. If not - the search continues.

Thanks for the help on this. Sometimes it's the simple things that can get so danged complecated.

mraroper -

Sorry, Rick - didn't mean to hijack your post.

Have you learned anything of value yet? LOL From the pics that Chagrin posted, I was able to get a better look at my disk anyway. I'll be tearing into it this weekend. If sucessful, I'll post results along with some pics.

Thanks,
Rich

Heres a pic, looks just like yours, but with a sleeve and some addition mods to the Caliper pull set up, this thing works perfect.

Scott,

That looks nothing like mine - NO RUST! :sidelaugh

Nice mod on the caliper pull set-up - much better than than the spring. I did finally get my head in and took a look at the disk - had to remove the tool tray. There is a keyway in there, and not easy to get at. I think most of my problem is rust and grime. Don't think the previous owner ever cleaned it. Pulled the caliper off today and gave it a good cleaning. I'll try putting everything back together tomorrow and see if that corrects the problem, if not, then I'll leave it until spring. I'm planning on doing a complete tear down next summer anyway, so that'll be a good time to refurbish / replace it. I did note on the parts list for this model Peerless transaxle that it takes a 3/16" x 3/4" square key, so I picked one up - just in case!

The key looks like it's as rusted as most everything on the tractor. Can the key be forced out from the backside? Can the rotor be machined down a bit to get the rust off? Wouldn't imagine it would hurt, as it doesn't require as much stopping power as a car or truck.

I'll throw some pics up here tomorrow.

Thanks to all for your help :thanku:
