This is the old confused guy again. I just installed a new distributor cap and new wires on my Ford 8N. The new wire instructions said to take off one wire at a time and put the new one on. Well I took off one wire but two or three of them pulled out of the old distributor cap. So I don't know for sure where to plug in the new wires in the distributor cap.

Here's what I think I need to do--- On the distributor cap there is a "1" by one of the posts. I assume that means that wire goes to cylinder 1. Then the firing order is 1 2 4 3 (I think). So going around the cap counter clockwise, after putting in 1, next is 2, next is 4 and last is 3. Is my thinking correct?? Please advise.

Thanks

My 9n spark plugs go likes this

Steering wear ||4 3 2 1 ||Front of tractor

My tractor is having problems like this as well. Had to get a whole new distributor

the numbers on the distributor means the spark plug number (which ever number it is) and you plug it up in that hole with the matching spark plug.

Side mount firing order is the same as front mount... 1-2-4-3, CCW.

The #1 post on the distributor cap is usually marked... has a 1 molded into it. There should be a 'keyway' on the distributor and/or dust cover and a matching tab on the cap, to get it put on one way (and one way only).

In theory - the marking on the cap is correct - in reality, I have seen it be wrong as much as right. The only REAL way you will be able to tell is remove the #1 spark plug (closest to the radiator) as well as the distributor cap, and with the ignition key turned OFF have someone hit the starter until you just feel your finger get blown off the spark plug hole. Look at where the rotor is pointing and the nipple closest (maybe just past) will be where the #1 spark plug wire goes. From there, just wire the rest 2,4,3 in a COUNTER-clockwise rotation.

Thanks again guys. Looks like I may have assumed the correct things. It is a side mount 8N.

I will take Dan's advise and double check the #1 cylinder with the wire going to the #1 on the distributor cap.

Thanks

I tried Dan's idea to check for #1 cylinder being up when the distributor was pointing to #1. It worked and the #1 on the distributor cap was the #1 cylinder.

I will try to post a picture of my version of an idea I stoled from someone on the site. It is a small gas tank a person can use without putting the hood and main gas tank back on the 8N so that you can run the 8N while checking it out. Hope it is usefull.
