Sounds like it has been upgraded to a Briggs 16 hp engine. The B&S 16 HP Vanguard V-Twin Model 303447 is used on the Professional 16 walk-behind.

While the 5665 came with with a 12hp Kohler engine, some of the later Pro series tractors featured Briggs 16 HP twin cylinder engines. A Gravely with the Briggs twin is highly sought after and commands the highest resale value.

Yes the crankshaft is a custom one that is unique to gravely. Having said that some have made special adapters to convert a standard crankshaft.

OH MY thank-you! that is great info- the gent gave me a briggs service manual also- and hand written on the front is "294447" I assumed this was the engine- although the book is for a whole line of v-twins- now I can search out my parts to get the engine going- looks like so far- blower shroud and rotating screen- starter, flywheel has half the fins broke off - I cannot believe how heavy these machine are- and well built

Interesting find. Richard is right about the popularity and price of the Pro-16 v-twins, and rightly so, they're very nice machines. Please post up some pictures if you get the chance.
