I know some of us have an issue with our tractors (Legacy, Prestige, Conquest...) where the throttle won't stay on full and slowly creeps down. Well, I brought this up to my dealer before my warranty ran out and he said the fix was a new throttle cable.

After having the installation done, I realized that "throttle cable" included the throttle and choke lever unit. Further, I realized that the new throttle lever has built in clicky detents at 1/4, 1/2, and full throttle! They obviously recognized the problem and fixed it in the newer versions. If anybody has this problem you can see about getting this fixed under warranty or at least pricing out the part yourself if you're not.

I just thought I'd pass this along since it is an annoying issue.

Thanks for the info.
I still have the problem on one of mine and I found it weird that there are no detents. Even my Craftsman GT5000 had a detent at full throttle to hold it there.

Mine are obviously way out of warranty, but I will look at buying a new cable. I think they run about $ 40 though :crybaby:

I had a Cub Cadet 2166 with a seperate choke cable and it would work its way out and choke its self.It was new at the time and my fix was.The cable ran straight in to the dash panel. There was no resistance on the cable.I added a tie strap around the cable and attached it to something near the cable and that pulled the cable side ways slightly giving it just a slight bit of resistance.Never had any more problems after that in the 6 years I owned it.

I went ahead and ordered the new throttle cable assembly from Jacks Small engines.
For my tractor the model number was 1687184SM

It does not have the detents, but they did change the construction.
On the old one it was a riveted assembly with a wave washer. It just got too loose over time. The new one is using a fiber washer and a locknut so it can be tightened if need be.
They also changed the handle and the assembly came with a new, red hard plastic handle that has a bolt through it. It looks pretty cheap to me and is similar to what is on the cheaper Simplicity tractors. However the old soft rubber style handle did not fit on it, but I may fix that at some point.

Just for a test I took the old assembly out and put it in a wise (I only have a small one) and gave it a really good squeeze on the rivet portion. It appeared to help and it would probably work now. So that is a test you can on yours before you drop $ 40 on a new assembly.

BTW, it was a total pain to get the handle mount off as the hydraulic lines are in the way so the two bolts were very difficult to get to.

Cable controls that tend to drift like that, if they have the solid wire inside rather than the braided core, can be tightened up by unhooking the cable at it's end, pulling it part way out of the jacket and bending it slightly with a pair of pliers. Small bend to start with as it doesn't take much.

Been using this trick for years on the old equipment that has the manual throttles and chokes on the dash. Quick and easy fix.
