I am being "gifted" with a L100. Owner ran it out of oil, and oil leaks out from the
bottom.
I don't need the mower.
I saw a short block on Ebay for then 17hp Intec for $150.00. The mower is in great shape besides the engine.
Would it be worth my time and money to fix it and sell this? I know the L100 is at the bottom of the food chain.
Thanks in advance

The L100 is a rarity in that it is about the only lawn tractor with a 5 speed manual transaxle. You can put just about any Briggs and Stratton engine from the John Deere 100 series on it. I had a farmer give me an L111 because the mower deck was shot. The engine only had 350 hours on it so I took the 2 cylinder engine, muffler and choke cable from the L111 and installed them on my L100 which had 1500 hours on it at the time. I saved the original 17 hp single for a spare. I put another 300 hours on the L111 engine in my old L100 and it is still running strong.

The L100 did not come with an hour meter but there is a cutout for it on the dash which has a plug in it and the wiring with the correct plug for it is there too under the dash. It was easy to add. Any engine in the series will fit but you will need the appropriate muffler and the appropriate throttle and choke cables and plate, so if you get an engine from another machine, get those parts too. For instance, the L100 doesn't have a separate choke lever but the L111 does. The second slot for the choke is there on the L100, it's just covered over by the laminated L100 dashboard cover. It's easy to cut the slot and add the choke lever if you get those parts.

I don't think there's much of a market out there for these machines. If you want to fix it up and keep it, then it might be worth the effort. I think you'd have a hard time selling it and and doing any better than breaking even if you're planning on flipping it.
