CRAFSTMAN G5500 Possible Purchase and Smart Switch

Hi everyone I have the chance to buy a Craftsman G5500 for $500. Only 100 hours. I'm just leary of the smart switch. I looked at the tractor but his battery was half dead so the smart switch and PTO was acting up. So it's hard to inspect everything.

How would I go about switching this to a standard key ignition. The Husqvarna GT54LS seems to be the husqy equivalent and it's keyed. Would I just be able to swap ignition?

Is this a good buy for $500?

Welcome to MTF!

According to Tractordata, this model was produced in 2014, eleven years ago. 100 hours in eleven years is extraordinarily low. I'd consider that and a very low price a serious red flag. However if its a legitimate seller, truly a 100 hour machine, and you are capable of some repair work, might be a good deal. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with smart switches. Not quite sure what they are supposed to do that a regular switch doesn't do already. I guess I have become very skeptical of anything labeled "smart" as it seems to introduce a highly failure prone bit of tech into an otherwise very simple process. That tech when it fails, costs multiples of the simple devices it is supposed to replace as an improvement.
In any case, hope that machine is a good one. Sounds like you lucked out and found a stored "garage queen". At $500 you can hardly go wrong. Hope it is a good one and provides you with many hours of good service.

Curious, I searched on your model and "smart switch". Lots and lots of gripes about them and some YouTube videos about problems and possible replacement with key switches.
Still, the machine sounds like it is well worth it and replacing that switch with a regular switch.

If the engine was running, the pto should have been able to engage.

I believe the switch will have a bunch of safety-logic inside it, w a bunch of external connections to the various safety switches and other things, so it's non-trivial to just change it to a regular switch (or several switches) and have all the safeties work properly.

Insert key, pull choke, set throttle at 1/3, turn key, choke off.
So how many of these horrible, demeaning, time wasting, and arduous tasks does the "smart switch" save us from enduring? "Smart switch", sounds more like a failed solution still looking for a problem to solve.
