6430 no spark??

Hmm, my 6430 arrived yesterday, so I took it out of the box this morning, assembled it, put gas in it, and fired it up. Second pull, it lit off. Started mowing the front lawn. This thing was running sweet. I couldn't believe how well it ran, and how solid it all felt. Lawn Boy Addict's heaven until 15 minutes into the lawn.... it stops. Just quit, like someone flipped a switch. So I looked in the gas tank, and it was a little low (didn't fill it up). Put more gas in, tried again. No start. Well, crap. Pushed the 6430 in the garage, pulled the 10247 out. Finished the lawn. Went back to the garage, tried again. No start. Went and did the string trimming, blowing, all that. Relaxed a bit. Went back to the garage, pulled the plug wire. Pulled the start rope. Hmm. No spark. Looked at the bail switch. Looked like maybe it wasn't fully 'plunged'. I don't know if the plunger of the switch needs to be pushed in all the way to close the circuit or not. I pulled the plug, it didn't look too bad. Cleaned it with a brass brush and put it back in. So at this point, I haven't touched anything else. I'm out of my element with this. But if someone can tell me what to look for, I can look. But for now, 6430 no workie. No spark. Strange it was running awesome, and then just stopped...

Put a piece of tape or something across the switch plunger and check again for spark. Loosen the jam nut on the screw the pushes the plunger. After it just contacts the tip of it, turn the screw 6 1/2 turns clockwise, and retighten the jam nut. Basic setting on the switch. You may need to pull the shroud and make sure the high tension lead(plug wire) didn't come loose. If all else checks out, try another coil if you have one. One more thing, make sure the ground wire(bare terminal end) that plugs into the spade on the bolt that holds down the coil, didn't come loose and ground out the ignition.

Will do. I have that Supreme Pro engine I posted pics of I can rob the coil from, if it would be the same. Also, does the plunger have to be all the way in to make or break the circuit??

Lawnboy part number 683215, open to run coil used on 83 and later F engines. Sometimes they just go out like this. Take the four phillips screws out that hold the shroud on, and then unplug the wires off the coil. See if the engine will fire up after the wires are disconnected. You can later shut the engine down with a screwdriver if it starts by grounding the plug lead to the head. While you have the hood up, check to make sure the coil is not touching the flywheel as it spins. Sometimes the hold down bolts will loosen up from vibration allowing the gap between the flywheel and the coil to close. Once this happens the ground accepts the coil voltage and the engine wont run. You can remove the coil by removing the two 5/16 bolts that hold it on. The system is self contained as has no points or other parts. The air gap between the coil and the flywheel magnets is set with a business card. Spin the flywheel around until the magnets are in line with the coil. Insert the business card between the two while using the magnets to hold the coil in place. Tighten the two 5/16 inch bolts and remove the business card. Last resort is to bake the coil in the toaster oven for an hour at 200 degrees. Sometimes moisture will ground the cdi out if its been sitting for awhile. The baking trick drives out the moisture and it may work again, although how long isnt known especially if you store the mower outside. Let us know what you find. A new coil is going to cost around $35 this year, maybe more if you go to a dealer, so its best to see what you can find yourself.

Best wishes,
Bob

Update: This morning I pulled the shroud and unplugged the wires for the switch from the coil. I had the plug out anyway, so I pulled the starter and checked for spark. Nothing. So, the coil is the culprit. The part number on the coil is 683080. I see the number Sharkey listed as the correct one.

Afternoon update: I pulled the coil out of the 6430. I pulled the one out of the Supreme Pro engine and installed it in the 6430. Put the shroud back on with the switch disconnected. Got spark! Pulled the shroud again, hooked up the switch, put everything back together, adjusted the bail cable, pushed it outside, and started it up. Back in business! Thanks for everyone's help! :trink40:

I never had an issue with the plastic carbs on either of the 8480's I had. And the one I still have. Dad thought when he bought the one new that it would be a horrible thing but it turned out not to be.
