I may have a chance to trade for a 1999 445. It has 1370 hours. Guy said he just did the main bearings and seals. Runs great. All regular maintenence was kept up.

Anything I should watch for or ask?

It comes with a 60" mowing deck and a turbo bagger?

I have the same exact questions. Is there anything specific on the 445 that had issues, or differences in years of production?

I have a early 445 (1993) about 850 hrs. I had this tractor about 8 years and have put about half the hrs. on it. The only issue i had with it last spring it starting skipping come to find out it had a plastic cam gear. Tore the engine down replaced the cam. Pulled the heads, Was going to freshen the eng. up but there was really no need to.
Other then routine service, battery, tires it's been great.

I think Kawasaki went to a steel cam gear in 1998?

My father has a 2001 445 the changes i know of are
Drink holder
Three position pto switch (hold up when backing) i don't have to
Aluminum fan shroud (i have plastic)
Different steering linkage (tie rods)
Steel cam gear
Different decals on side panels

Hope this helps some:goodl:

When did all these changes take place in the 445? Was it in 1998 when it got the cupholder as an example?

I couldn't tell you when, But we had these machines side by side and that's what we could see. There may be more changes within that i couldn't see.
Both these machines have been great. Very solid and dependable.:fing02:

i have used a 445. there was absolutely no shortage of power

Agreed, 22hp, whether gas or diesel, is sufficient if not overkill for this size garden tractor. The only advantage a 455 might have over the 445 is engine longevity and the Kawasaki (aside from the cam gear issue which can be addressed if necessary) is proving to be a pretty stout engine from the number of hours that are showing up these days. Also, the diesel is more efficient but it is offset by typically higher fuel cost. I chose the 445 as I prefer to only have to keep gasoline around for all my gas powered engines.

As far as the whole plastic/steel cam gear issue on the 445, steel camshaft were used in production models starting in February 1998 in FD620 engines (beginning serial 150198).

Does anyone have pictures of the 40 loader controls as mounted on the 445? I am curious where the levers are on the 445 to operate the 3PH, Blower, Blade, Loader, etc?

Which levers are they? I am trying to understand how they work and where they are on the tractor when the loader is mounted up.

one lever is the deck lift, the other is the rear lift

I guess I am more curious is to how they are used on the loader functions, and which one does what, like up down on the boom and or up down on the bucket.?

the hydraulic control levers that operate the loader are on the loader, not the tractor itself

Ok. Does anyone have a picture of the controls on the loader?

Glockem,
Top lever is up/down on deck and loader boom, rockshaft shutoff valve cuts out deck.
Bottom is bucket tilt

Let me know if you want any more pics, sorry first one wasn't all that clear.
