Those nuts are horrible. If it's an ngk plug I think it would have an identical model with a solid connector. On snowmobiles they will loosen up no matter what you do except maybe a lock washer.
They are NGK as a matter of fact, and if I was thinking I should have tried some thread lock on them, of course maybe thread lock isn't conductive and it would hamper the performance. I suppose I should just get the solid connector plugs if they have them.

445MN, thanks so much for the pictures. I've been having the exact same problem with my 445, and have been fairly reluctant to take it apart. Using your pics made it a breeze. I have a question though, how did you test your magnets to see if you put them back in wrong?

Cheers,

Well, if I remember right, I didn't do a real scientific test. I just took a small screwdriver and slid it along the magnets that hadn't come off of the flywheel. I noted that the opposing force (when the magnets pushed the screwdriver away) was on the same side on each of them. I then did that to the ones I had just glued back on and found that 2 out of the 3 were the opposite. Not the best way to test them I would imagine, but it seemed to make sense at the time. Did you replace the flywheel, or did you glue some back on ?

So, I bought a used 445 about a year ago and the charging light was coming on. I would just put the tractor on a battery charger when I was finished with it. This finally killed the battery, so I decided to take it apart and fix it.

3 of the magnets on my flywheel look like they still have the factory glue on them. 2 of them look like they might have been reattached.

I did something similar to check them yesterday, only I used a cobalt magnet on the end of a screwdriver. I think that maybe the person who had it before me might of done the same thing with the magnets.

Sounds like the same thing. I wonder just how common it is for those magnets to come off of the flywheel. By chance did the positive battery terminal keep getting the white sulfur on it before the battery went dead, because mine did until I put the new/used flywheel in. I was lucky though, because I still have the same battery in and it works great.

Yeah, I believe there is but I don't remember the colors and where they go right now. I would have to look again, but I'm sure by then you'll have the answer from any one of the great minds on this forum. The service manual is on this forum also.

Makes sense being AC voltage, for some reason I thought that there was more than one color wire, or one with a stripe, but, it's been a year since I looked at that.

BTW, if anybody needs, or knows somebody who needs a stator for a 445, I have one yet that I will sell for a good price (cheaper than I bought it for). :thThumbsU

Any luck on finding a decent priced flywheel ?

Yep, found one on ebay for $225 shipped. Got it in last Sunday, and that seemed to fix the problem. Measured 28-30ish volts ac. the charging light comes on when you start the tractor but goes out and stays out once you throttle up. Thanks everybody for the help. Especially the pictures

Glad to hear you got it taken care of, that's exactly what I paid for my flywheel from Ebay, could be from the same place. The voltage was the same on mine also. It's a great feeling fixing it yourself and seeing that battery light go out isn't it ? Well congrats. :thThumbsU

yep, sure is. I need to post a picture of the flywheel I took out of there. It was painfully obvious that 2 of the magnets had been replaced. What's real;y funny is that I took the flywheel into a JD dealer to show to one of their techs... I was told that it looks fine. So much for the techs...

Well, first of all, you know how we like pictures. :wwp: Also, it is truly rare to find a great service tech nowadays that are worth there weight in gold. That's one of the reasons I try to do as much of the repairs as I can. This forum has a ton of great minds to help also.
