So my 1996 445 with 320 hrs on it has decided not to charge the battery (bought in 2011) anymore so to make a long story short (well, not quite as long) I did some testing of the charging system according to the service manual and when I checked across the stator wires with the plug disconnected from the regulator/rectifier, I only measured about 8 VAC. According to the service manual, it should be at least 26 VAC. I should note that I did the whole charging circuit check and this was the only thing that I found out of spec. Also, I'm assuming that if the magnet/s wasn't intact anymore, I wouldn't have any voltage on the stator wires. Is this a relatively common problem on these or is it rare, because I searched it on this forum and didn't find anything on this model.
Is this a pain in the behind to replace, or not a big deal ? Also where is the best place to get one (should I stick with new, or would Ebay be a viable choice(there is one on there now for $50 & it looks pretty decent)). The way it looks from the limited time I was able to see before it got dark, I would just need to take the radiator/housing off and the drive shaft to get to the flywheel. If anybody with experience with this procedure could give me some pointers it would be greatly appreciated. I am keeping the charger on there between mowing so I can keep the grass from becoming a hay field at this time of year. Thanks much in advance.

I should probably add that the battery charging light started coming on at low idle a little while back but would disappear when the throttle was increased just a little. Now the light stays on even at WOT. Also checked battery cable connections and associated connections to charging system.
