That looks like a Pro8 which came with a plastic tank as a integral part of the engine. Why he mounted a tank there could be for any number of reasons. One of which is due to the fact that the late 8 hp Kohlers had issues with fuel lines as well as other fuel delivery issues. Anyway that looks like the stock tank for that engine, so reversing that setup back to stock could be easy.

I guess I'll never know for sure. The listing was removed right after I asked about it, and he hasn't replied.

Maybe its just me, but that doesn't look like a Kohler engine on that....could it be a re-power and they had to find a place to put the fuel tank?

It is a magnum 8 different air cleaner cover, magneto style coil instead of battery and different flywheel other wise same beast :fing32:
 
That is a genuine Gravely equipped engine. I have it's twin. They are a points and condenser ignition and the battery is the tiny L&G type.
