I have the opportunity to pick up a good condition JD 7 steel cart. The seller is asking $200. From what I understand these carts were first produced in 1988, and are considered a "lighter" version of the 80 correct? I'm waiting on a few more pics before I go look at it, but no visible rust, tailgate in tact, and tires look nice from what I can see in the two pics I have seen.

So my question is, is a 7 cart worth $150-$200 in good condition? They don't seem collectable at all like the 80 is and are probably one of the more common JD steel carts. Also how much lighter than the 80 is it? I plan to haul fire wood, garden tools, maybe some mulch and dirt, etc. Down the road I may get into some pavers or retaining wall blocks. Is this cart too light for that type of work?

Thanks in advance!

Quite a bit lighter gauge than 80 and of course smaller, lower to the ground. Capable of hauling firewood unless you plan to throw it in and beat it to death. Price to me seems steep. I had the opportunity to buy one in my area for $100 and it was in good shape but someone beat me to it. I would think you could find a good 10 steel cart for $200, just depends on how quick you need/want.

Thanks for the advice, I have never seen a 7 cart in person so I was having a hard time gauging the size of it. Sounds like I may want to go for a heavier duty one.

$200 is way to much money for a 7 cart. I paid $99 for mine on E-Bay with local pick up. I also have a 7P that was almost new that I paid $125 at a larger swap meet. The one picture with 3 carts show 2 80s and the 7. You can easily see that the 80 is a much better cart. Roger

Thanks for the pictures, they are helpful! Obviously I would love to have an 80 vs anything else, but they are hard to find and rather expensive. How much abuse would you be comfortable putting your 7 cart through? Limited to just hauling some firewood, etc?

The first thing I did was beef mine up with angle iron where the folds in the metal were. It is light duty cart designed for a load of grass and basically nothing heavier than that. According to the sticker on the cart it is limited to 780 pounds. If you are willing to spend $200 on a 7 save your money and and $100/$150 to it and you should be able to buy an 80. Where in IL are you? I would be willing to sell my best 80 for $300 and I live on the WI/IL border close to Harvard IL. Roger

I am in central Illinois just north of Peoria. About 2 1/2 hrs from Sharon. I'd be willing to make the trip for a good 80 cart at that price. Can you PM some more pictures of it sometime? Thanks!

I took these today. The 2 carts on the outside are 1968s. The other one is newer than 1975. One I call my worker and it has a home made aluminum tail gate. The newest one was brush painted when I bought it. Best one $300, second best $225 and the worker $150. I think I have a set of JD decals and if I do I will include them with the best one. If you want my address or have other questions probably should switch to private messages. Roger
