I have a MF 1655 born in 1982 with a Onan engine, the starter seems to have gone capoot, the manual says the only way to remove the starter is to pull the engine. A little help please, are there any other options? I haven't gotten serious about this project yet but need to, my mowing season begins here in March. Also, I'm assuming that the starter can be rebuilt.

Hate to tell you, but you do have to unbolt the engine to get the starter off. You may just be able to get out the engine mount bolts, or the engine mount plate unbolted, un-do the driveshaft & pto belts, and lift the engine up enough to get the starter off without completely pulling it from the chassis.

:ditto:
I just had to do that on my neighbors 1855.

I'd put a jumper to the starter just to make sure thats the problem the cheapie solenoids lawn and garden tractors use can be the problem.I replace them with the old style Ford solenoids that mounted on the fender

You mention rebuilding a starter....never thought of that! Any idea what the cost of rebuilding one is?

A new one on Ebay is 47.00

With the tons and tons of JD 318 parts available, would that work? A 420?

I always like to keep my eyes out for these last minute $.99 deals on ebay and have parts for a rainy day!

I missed a coil for my Kohler 321.....I bid 1.25 and had to run out. It sold for 1.49 or 1.75 and reasonable ($4?) shipping. 6 bucks well spent if a coil craps out on Sat afternoon when its snowing and the blower is on that tractor!!

Don't know, just thought a rebuild would be quicker and less expensive than a new one. I'll let you now when I get it done, which will be soon.

Got the engine out, is sitting on 4x4's across the top of the frame. I had to take the cowling off to get to the bolts, it looks like I'll have to pull the fly wheel to get the top bolt into the hole. I had all i could do to get the top one out. That's ok because i need a new stator, where can I get one? The engine is a 16 HP Onan ms.

Another problem comes to mind, occasionally I get engine oil back up thru the breather pipe in the bottom of the air filter. Any suggestions? I figured that I may as well check that out as long as it is up on blocks so to speak.

I am not exactly sure of the interchanges, but used Onan parts are on Ebay. I usually keep my eyes open for things on there that can save me $$ in the long run.

I am pretty sure your Onan is the B43....which shares many of the same parts as the P218 that came on John Deere. I think the p218 starter is on the opposite side though....

OK folks here is the lastest and greatest on my rebuilt starter. If you can find it on ebay go for it, my rebuild was $75 plus tax which is 9.25%, but it sure looks nice.
Oh yea my rectifier is bad, that is coming tomorrow for $82 plus tax.

Need some help with oil filters for the Onan I have one left that I got from a dealer in Michigan. Is there a NAPA brand or some other brand that will work? If so brand and number please.

Thanks
Dan

NAPA brand is actually WIX filters. I got my Transaxle filter for my 1450 at NAPA and he crossed it on the spot.

My NAPA guy says drop the first number and thats the NAPA number!

NAPA has a pretty good cross reference too. My NAPA guy can usually cross reference almost anything.

If you have a filter, take it to NAPA and let them cross it. I looked at WIX.com and if its the same as a P218 then the filter is a 51374 oil filter.
