Yea Theo, that is what I was thinking as well. If I had not plowed on Saturday twice, I would have had a heck of a time plowing everything we got all just on Sunday. The tractor is tough, and it is really fun to watch when you are pushing snow and it starts that rolling push on the front end of the blade.

The only time I spun the rear wheels was when I had the nose of the tractor up in the air by about 15-30 degrees when trying to push the snow up and over the already tall snow pile. So I don't think I need chains, eventhough I know they would make the tractor that much better in the slippery stuff.

You won't see this much snow here again for a long time. It's happened 2 maybe 3 times since your tractor was built in '92 and odds are it will be another 10 years or so before it happens again.

Don't expect a 'if you build it, snow will come' scenario if you make modifications in preparation for another one like this around here anytime soon.

Its clear that getting out in it and battling the amount of snow made you happy and you got to see what your tractor is made of and are finding some things that could be better if you tackle this amount of snow again but it won't be an every season occurrence.

And if you believe in Mr "I invented the Internet" (Gore) the snows going away anyhow.

to ponder:

I wonder if he laid off the Twinkies, he'd be lighter, making his private jet lighter, thus burning less fuel, and stop putting in all that harmful C02 into the atmosphere.

But also if he laid off the Twinkies and exercised and he would be breathing harder and thus emitting even more C02

Visious cycle..:sidelaugh

But whatever, you had fun in the snow, got to play with your toys and learned in the process. You'll probably have to move way farther north to encounter this much snow on a regular basis. I've been in VA for 47 years and it just doesn't come down like it did last weekend that often.

I am glad I rarely have to deal the the white stuff. You do look like your having fun. Be careful out there.

1995, 2002/2003, and now 2009 were the last big storms I remember. There was also a crazy ice storm we got back in 2000 I believe that crippled the whole state especially in the Northern Neck.

Yea Theo, I need to find the correct chains for my 26" Tru-Powers as well. But if I need chains with Tru-Powers, then I am probably exceeding the capability of the tractor/tires anyway and shouldn't be using the chains?

Glockem,

It was actually 1996. I was still living in Joisey at the time, but watching the news reports, I saw that the storm that dumped 36" in 24 hours on us had dumped about 24" in 24 hours on the DC area. Funny, it was not long after the snow cleared from that, that I found work in Virginny and moved down here. Living in Manassas at the time, I believe we had a pretty large snow storm (6"+, I think) in '98 or '99, I remember having to drive my wife to Falls Church in it, took 2 or 3 hours to get there, she worked 2 hours, then was sent home :fing20:. The 2003 storm I remember because we got a huge rain storm afterward and my basement got about 1/2" of water in it because the snow melt and rain had nowhere to go.

I just hope the next Big'un (i.e. 12"+) is another 13 years down the road. :i_praying

I've been reading about all the threads last week about your snow removal. Today was our day of the snow, not quite your amounts but enough. I have admiration for you guys. Our biggest issue was snow drifts. But chains on the tires are life savers, they search and find solid ground.

:ditto: Wish I had your 318 to try out Glockem, but the Custom 6 with chains did just fine. Only a couple of times it didn't want to turn. I am going to try Roller chain on the front tires when it warms up. :bannana:

Well, maybe if I ever find a cheap #49 blower I might just get it, restore it and leave it on the shelf until we get another snow in Virginia.

Weather Channel is calling for "wintery Mix' here--coming Thusday/Friday..

Are you saying I need to prep the tractor and plug it in again in preparation for next week?:duh:

Just relaying what I saw this a.m.--you are a few miles north of me--so your's may be worse--and also--four days away??

It will certainly change several times by then...:00000060:

So, is the weather still coming? I am ready to plow some more....:greendr:

Your steering problem with the angled blade is exagerated by the rear wieght you are carrying and of course by the smooth turf tires. The front tires are probabley just skimming accross the ground with the blade pushing them up and the rear wieght cantilivering them up. Loose the rear wieghts and maybe try wrapping a chain around the front tires. I bet you can't steer with the blade straight either?

It is worth getting it steering as an angled blade is very important in snow removal. millions of snow plow rigs out there and they all have an angle feature for a reason.

BTW nice to see the tractor grin on your face I'd be smiling too with a rig like that and a fresh snow.
24" of wet snow was too much for the 318 with the angled blade. the millions of snow rigs out there are usually on a dump truck that weighs about 8 tons not 800#. We had the wet snow just 6" of it.

Well on that Saturday it was like 12", and I knocked that down knowing that I couldn't do the full 24" on the following day. It wasn't really wet snow, it was more like packed powder by the second day.

Its time to get the biggest, baddest, snowblower I can find to mount on this 318 then for the 2" of snow we may or may not get then, right.:drunkie:
