Hello All,

I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I sure am glad I found this site. I bought an old Florida house on 1.3 acres which has been sitting vacant for over a year and the lawn hadn't been cut for over a year. I purchased a 1983? Allis Chalmers 5030 with 537 hours. It came with lawn tires and a finish mower. I paid $2300 (I hope I didn't pay too much! ) which included a $100 delivery fee. This is the first tractor I've owned and I love it. The only problem is that it seems to run a little hot. The guage isn't into the danger zone, but it gets pretty close. Is this common for these little diesels?

Thanks,
Russell

Well, now you've done it. Bought a house, some land AND a GT. Let the fun begin.

Welcome to the forum and Merry Christmas.

welcome aboard. hope we can help. i did a little googling and you seem to have quite the machine there. looks like a bunch of fun!

I haven't seen much in the way of info for you. Most diesels tend to run cold. Yours sounds like it may have a cooling problem.
check all of the hoses, check the radiator, make sure the cooling fins are clear and open to get fresh air. If that desn't help, you may need more serious help. Get back to the group and someone will try to help you. Best wishes for an easy fix.

Welcome to the forum. On that age of tractor I'd lean towards the radiator needing rodded out. If you've got a temp gun, check the temp of the radiator at various points up and down it. That tractor shouldn't run hot even working it hard on a hot day.

Hello Again,

Sorry I haven't posted any pictures yet. I've had the tractor apart and have been working on it. I removed and flushed the radiator. This tractor was old and rusted when I bought it and I am now paying the price. I broke a bolt trying to loosen the alternator to change an oversize belt I also broke a bolt removing the radiator. Not only that, but the by-pass nipple located on the t-stat housing was corroded and disintegrated when I removed the kinked hose which was on it. I tapped the hole and plugged it.

The glow plugs weren't working and she wouldn't start when the least bit cold. I removed the plugs and tested them with a battery charger and they worked fine. I started looking under the dash and found several cut wires. I am still trying to figure out the wiring, but I did get the glow plugs working and she starts right up now.

I was unable to get get the t-stat housing apart to access the thermostat. I tried soaking it overnight in oil. I tried tapping it with a hammer. I tried heating it. I tried for hours and hour and I still couldn't get it apart. I was afraid I might break it, and the t-stat seemed to be working, so I put it back together without ever getting the t-stat out. Now, of course, it leaks at the gasket. I might take it off and put it in a kitchen oven on high for a few hours. Anybody have any other ideas? :Disgus:

Can someone tell me how much trans fluid the tractor should hold? There is no dipstick and I would like to change the fluid. :thanku:

Thanks Much,
Russell
