Well here we go. I am working on a 345 for a guy and it hardly runs. There is a little history here that should be noted. Last year he got it REAL hot. To the point that it melted the plastic valve covers. The small hose on the water pump leaked all the coolant out. Amazingly it ran a whole year with no problems afterward.

This year is a different story, it will not run with the choke off. And if it does run, it misses until the choke is half way engaged. Now this is where it get interesting. I have pulled the fender deck and checked the plastic tube into the tank. I have cleaned the carburetor 2 times. I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel shutoff solenoid, carburetor, and the time delay module. I don't know what else could be replaced fuel related. I also threw a couple of new plugs at it. So I thought I would take a shot in the dark and do a compression test. JD tech manual says a minimum of 170 psi. I got a reading of 100 in both cylinders. I did a test on another 345 next to it and got 150 psi on a 1300 hour machine.

Once I got this reading, I tried the oil in the cylinder deal and got it to seal up to 180. I did a leakdown and I am getting air coming up through the pushrod area.

He wants to rebuild it, I haven't checked with the dealers yet for parts but, are the readily available? They have got to be expensive I would guess. What has everyone ran into?

That is interesting. Usually when you need to run it on choke. That mean's without choke, not enough gas. So that would be a lean condition. How are the seals around the carb? I've had issues with the intakes on some of these engines, plastic one's and they do not seal. Which in turn, need the choke on.

The kawi engine is pretty common. Not only dealers can get a hold of parts, but also a kawi motorcycle dealer. If you know the model of engine, simplicity, deere, and, probably other's have or can get parts.

Rebuild, shouldn't be to bad. All depends on condition and what is needed for the rebuild. Couple rings won't be a lot. But make sure valves are in good shape and sealing as well, And the springs work.

I just rebuilt mine, wasn't that bad. I replaced the plastic cam, rings, honed the cylinders, new valves lapped in, new waterpump, bearings, valve springs, govenor, oil pump, every gasket and some other things I can't remember right now before 2nd cup of coffee. Runs awesome. The manual is available online and the specific engine manual is as well. Parts are easily attainable I got most of mine from Pats small engine and Bombergers.

You need a 2 3/4" flex hone for the cylinder or equivalent.

I took possession of a 345 with 920 hours on it. It had engine troubles and wouldn't run when I got it. Pulled the motor, and found the crankshaft to flywheel key sheared. This caused a timing problem that prevented running. During this time, I pulled mine down and measured everything. Mostly at brand new spec. I did put two pistons and rings in. Scratched the bores with a hone and put her back in service. Machine runs great almost today.

Parts are available, a tad spendy, but you can get everything you need for it for the most part.

Today, mine loads up on fuel at idle and i think its running rich most of the time. It will only load up after its hot and you idle it for about 5 min. Then it tries to die, blows black smoke, comes back to life....rinse and repeat until you take it off idle. This annoys me, must be fixed.
