I'm a "flap faces direction of rotation" guy myself. To me, it just makes sense to take advantage of the support that the auger scoop gives by doing it that way. If the flap is on the "back" of the auger, it is constantly being pulled away from the auger and pulling against the bolts holding it on. But when the flap is on the front of the auger, it is being pushed against the wide surface area of the auger plate and much less force is put on the area around the bolts. Just my opinion. I've never done it the other way so I don't have any actual - "proof". Just theory. I've considered mounting one flap in front of one scoop and another flap in back of the other scoop, just to see if there is any difference in wear or durability.
I put the rubber (1/4" thick) on the back side of the auger, but it is supported by a piece of aluminum that sticks out as far as the auger does.

If you put one piece of rubber on the front of one and the back of the other, it can cause an imbalance of the auger.

I bought the materials for this mod on my 42" early last fall, but with the mild winter, I never got around to fitting it in my schedule. Finally took about 30 minutes yesterday and cut the pieces and bolted them on in anticipation of a big snow storm this weekend. The 1.5" out on the ground is laughing at me today, but I'm glad to have it done and the GX345 is ready for action whenever winter does finally arrive.

Still waiting for a decent snow to try my mod. out. Cut two pieces of sidewall out of an old rear sod tire and bolted them on, trimmed to just "scrape" as they come up around. But El Nino has said "No snow for you!" so far this season. But, this being Michigan, that could change in no time.

Am trying out this mod but i need to find this baler belt stuff. Where are all of you gents finding this stuff? Ace Hardware? Thanks!!

Farm supply stores like TSC & Rural King.

Thanks guys! I have a Tractory Supply about 15 miles away. I have a Family Farm and Home only 3 miles away. I also need to get the metal plates but I have the bolts, washers, and locking nuts. I'm excited to get this done! I also need to find a nice heavy duty pair of scissors. Thanks gentleman!

I used fender washers instead of the metal plate.

You might also find that a local garage will give you a worn out tire somebody had replaced. The rubber from the sidewalls is perfect for this and easy to cut with a sharp utility knife. Start with two pieces 3" by 5" and trim them a bit once they're on.

Hi guys, I just installed the flapper mod and it works great! Thank you all for your help! This is a real simple mod that took me 20 min. Everyone should do it! I am trying to figure out how to post a pic this is weird I've posted several pics on here before from my phone and now I can't figure it out. Thanks again!

Did the mod this past week on my 49 blower connected to a 1971 JD 120. Took me about an hour and a half because I had to drill all holes in auger. But as you can see it worked well.

When I did this mod to my blower I used an old worn out piece from a small toro single stage unit from work. The material is 1/4" thick and is basically the same as the baler belt. We have a couple of those small single stage units at work for light snow amounts and once those paddles wear down just a bit, they work poorly. I usually replace the paddles on those units 2 or 3 times per year so I have no shortage of that material. It works fantastically.

Finally got to use the 325 with the flap mod and it definitely worked well. I got quite a bit more distance and needed it with the amount of snow we got!! Now just need to work on my traction problems!

Jim, that is the same material I used for my snow blade. Works great!

Just got back from Tractor Supply in Allentown, NJ. They no longer sell this material by the foot. You have to buy a roll. The search goes on!

Got an old tire? Cut it up and use that?
