Hi guys. I bought this machine a few years ago for cheap. Used it a bit and the trans was making a clunking sound. I have been able to get along without a big tractor by using my garden tractors for two years. Well I need a big boy machine so I am going to tackle this project. I've never split one before but after doing a bunch of you tube watching and reading I am confident I can get it done. This weekend I got started. Got the rockshaft off and the gearshift cover.
I found the gear that's broken. It's missing several teeth. There's two that are bad as the top one damaged the bottom one. It's the 4th and direct drive sliding gear and the gear below it the sliding coupling. I have not started to split it because I want to have the parts. Mainly to make sure I can get them. I am going to try the dealer just to check but I doubt they will be able to get anything. So if any of you know where I can call for parts let me know please. I would be ok with getting the whole shaft and gears. I have a few pics on my phone I will post in just a minute.

According to my I&T shop manual,#29, it appears that the transmission is the same for the B275,414,424,2424 and 3414 and diesel or gas makes no difference. Hopefully this will make the search a little easier. You may be wise to find one of these booklets as there are some special procedures depending on options, like forward-reverse shuttle and live PTO.

Go to Messicks Home | Messick's . Use the online parts catalog, top left in the menu. Click on Case/IH, then enter your tractor model. Drill down through the menu to find transmission, then find your gear. You'll find the part number and price.

If you're looking for a good used one, go here: http://www.tractorhouse.com/ Look in the red menu at the left of page, 5th item down, "parts search". Copy and paste, or write down the part number, and type it in the gear part number, in the block top right of the page that appears, after clicking the parts search. Any salvage dealer that has this gear in stock will be listed. It won't show a price, and you need to call for that. You can use the new price, as a price guide.

If you don't get any results that way, go back to the TractorHouse main page, and select the 3rd item down in the menu at left, "Post a free want to buy ad". You'll need to register, and give some contact info. Salvage yards will contact you, normally within 24-36 hours if they have one in stock. They will give you the price, and cost for shipping. Don't necessarily take the first one offered. Give it a day or so, but do keep track of the prices, and contact info. I have seen quite a bit of difference in prices in things I've inquired about. If I remember right, all yards give a 90 day guarantee on used parts, and if you're not satisfied with said part, I do believe you can send it back on their dime.

Hope this helps..!!

Hey thanks both if you. I have ordered an IT manual and I will start the search today for parts.

Well my manual shipped today so that's exciting. I went to Messics and they have the gears new. I was shocked at how much they have for this thing new. I've been really worried about parts because my local IH dealer has pretty much said bummer tough luck. Now that said I wasn't sure I wanted to spend more on two gears than I paid for the tractor.:sidelaugh. So I went to trqctor house and by golly there are several places that have what I need. I emailed a few but only wengers in PA responded to me. Both gears with shipping is $300. I can live with that so I am going to order them. After beautiful weather this last weekend it has turned to uhh let's say brown stuff. Since the tractor is outside under a tarp right now the splitting and replacement will have to wait for another nice weekend.

The dealer probably would have fed you quite a yarn if you asked them about buying a shiny new machine -at least that's how they are around here anyway. It seems like if you are working on something that's more than 10 years old, they can't be bothered to even look at their parts bin or service manuals. The small engine shops are even worse around here.

I should talk to them. I have never done anything with them other than the auction. I always forget they do parts.

Weather is still awful so no real work on it this weekend. Got my service manual on thurs and have been reading up on how to split the tractor and remove the shafts I need to remove.

No real progress on this thing. Weather on the weekends have not been good. Was ok yesterday so I took the plastic off and got the lower part of the dash off. Parts are here so it's just waiting for decent weekend weather to split it.

Day turned out to be nice. Well until now that is. Raining and the wind is howling. However I did get a fair amount done. It all ready to split. It's blocked up in front and the jack is under the back. Found what the manual ment about snap ring, cap and o ring and got that removed. Removed the bolts from the two halves and ... Well it's still in one piece. Either I have missed something or it's been stuck together since 1964. I suspect the last item. I stopped trying as I could feel the weather changing and cleaned up my mess.

Weather is nice and is suposed to be for a few days. After dinner I went out and unwrapped the IH. Could not get it to split. Messed with it and pried and pushed. There was some creative language and everything. Note to anyone who does this and finds this thread. While the shop manual doesn't seem to mention it there are two bolts up inside the transmission case in addition to all the ones on the outside. :banghead3 once I found them it was a big day here. I split my first tractor. :woohoo1: got dark so I will work on it a bit tomorrow. My hope is that I will be able to put it back in one piece by Sunday. :dunno: hopefully.

A few hrs and a some creative words and the main transmission shaft is out. Amazing how many sharp edges there are in these gear boxes. Lost some skin but its only blood right. One gear is replaced already and just need to get the bottom shaft out which requires the back bearing to get off the shaft. It's about halfway off. Many many little taps with the hammer and punch. Got dark so I will start working on it again tomorrow morning.

Was a good day today. This whole project has been way smoother than I expected it to be. By mid day I had the countershaft out and cleaned up the spare parts in the bottom of the case. Gear teeth broken snap ring etc. Took to countershaft to the shop and pressed the bad gear off and the good gear on. Went back home and some assembly required. By the end of the day it's in one piece again. The only thing left to do is put the PTO shaft back in. However the snap ring that holds the rear bearing on the countershaft was broken and I so far can't find one locally. It's a bummer because I could button the thing up tomorrow. Once I find the parts I will be able to finish it up in a few hrs. Everything seems to turn the way they are supposed to and slide where they are supposed to so I think I have it right.

Whoooo! It lives! :bananapow have a few pics I will post in a min. They are on my phone. Finished up the last stuff today. Put in the foot rest and the exhaust. Yesterday and Friday evening I put the gear lube in then installed the gear shift cover and rockshaft housing. Put some fuel in it today and after some cranking it fired up. Then I drove it around the hard. Whew it seems to work great. Now to get an attachment or two for it starting with a way to control my field. :fing32:

Well I guess I only have the all put back together one. Thought I had more. Now to get it to charge the battery. I may just need to flash it. I just have to figure out how to do that.

Took it out for another drive later because well because. I was convinced when it broke I didn't have the equipment to fix it. Now I did and its fun to drive it. :dunno: never had it in high range before. It moves right along.

Good news, QA. I suppose you will be changing your screen name from QAFarm to QAFarmer now. :sidelaugh

Do you have any implements for the B414 ?
