I posted this in another area..thought it might be better suited here. Thanks

I recently picked up a Ariens GT 18. The previous owner said he thought it was a 1987. I purchased this for snowblowing my driveway.

In relation to servicing the hydraulic system: What is the proper fluid for this? The guy said it just takes 10w-30? Is that right? Also the hydraulic system sounds pretty loud when running? Is that normal? Change filter and fluid annually?

:thanku:

On my 1977 S16H, both under the hood and in the service manual it said to use 10W-30 in the hydro. Some will tell you to run 5W-30 for winter purposes, but I never did. A couple of minutes to warm up and it was good to go. I believe both have the Sunstrand Hydro.
No need to do it annually unless you are racking up mega hours on it. Don't forget the new filter. They do make a bit of noise, but if you are not losing power don't worry about it.
Nice machine you got there, you will be impressed at how well it will throw the white stuff.

ariens has all their manuals online, there is a link in one of the stickies in the header of this section. i'm using 15w40, might be a little thick in winter, but i don't want to stock 4 grades of oil.

Thanks fro the replies !! I have a couple other questions.

Have you ever had to replace the cable that rotates the blower chute? It looks like plastic coated cable. Maybe it could be found at a Lowes or the like?

I replaced the fuel pump, now she wont start. I am thinking the pump is dry?

I tried a few of the box store cables for chute rotation. I tried 2 different ones neither worked as good as original. This cable setup is my least favorite setup.
Mine has a nice deflector though and ice rippers and torque clutch.

I would like to eliminate the sloppy pole cable setup!

coated steel clothes line ... or air craft cable ....

fuel pumps have 2 check valves in them ( and a primer lever ) make sure to rotate the engine so the arm inside is not riding on the cam when you use the primer lever ....

pull the lines off the intake and exhaust to the pump, squirt some wd40 in the both sides and reconnect the fuel line ... prime with the lever ...

Would also be a good time to check the pickup fuel line and screen in the tank and replace the fuel filter. I have gravity primed the carb before using a remote tank, works well. I run straight SAE 30 in the transaxle just let it warm up in cold weather.
