UPDATE 9/21/09.

Spent the last couple days wet sanding the side panels and deck.

Let's just say the Police would have a hard time fingerprinting me right now...

It took a LONG time as I used 1500 grit.
I used 600 at 1st and ended up sanding through to primer in a couple small spots on the deck and one side panel:crybaby:.

So on those two pieces I continued with the 600 grit and got them nice and smooth and repainted again today.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pic's.:duh:

Ya right...of course there are pics!

Now prior to the wet sanding I rubberized a couple pieces.
the two brackets that go under the deck and that the seat springs attach to.

And the bottom of the battery tray.

Taped the hole thing up 1st leaving only the parts I wanted rubberized uncovered.

Image

Then using this stuff I laid on 4 good coats.

Image

After a day to cure I removed the tape.
You'll not at the top left corner of the tray some dumb-@*** put his/her finger in the uncured coating.(me)

Then I turned to the hand and back torture, er...I mean wet sanding.

Set up with my saw horses outside,a bucket of soapy water, sandpaper and a squeegee.

Thought I was going to use the 2000grit but things buffed out fine as you shall see.

Image

I applied a guide coat to the panels 1st.
I've never used a guide coat before and found it VERY helpfull seeing how far I had to sand.

This was after 5 minutes of sanding with the 1500grit paper....sloooow going.

Image

Crappy close-up but the dark spots are the low area's I still needed to sand down to. That's the orange peel I needed to sand away.

Image

OH... look who showed up...for about 15 minutes anyway.

69 Plymouth Sport Satellite in the back ground.

Reflection of the light after I finished with this panel. The water simulated how it will look once buffed out.

Working on the deck here.

Today I was out buffing.
I have a variable speed Makita buffer/polisher that works real well.
Started with the wool pad and ended with a blue foam one. Could have gone one step further and finished with a white foam pad but things looked great after the blue.

I used this stuff to buff.

Looks like this.

And this is the result after the buffing....NICE.

I hadn't put a coat of wax on it in the above pic's but have since and the shine is even glossier now.

So I now have to repeat the wet sanding on one side piece and the deck and then buff them out.

Amazing work! I'm feeling bad for you and this is a lawn tractor. I can't imaging how much I'm going to be cussing when the 8N comes apart next year! Probably 3x the painted surfaces!

I will be danged if that ain't gonna be the shiniest tractor, car, truck, thing on your block. Your gonna have to wear shades just to sit on it.:ROF

Just went through this entire thread and I can only say, if your just beginning to paint with this result, you could turn this into a for profit business! My brother in law is friends with the guys who build custom cars for ZZ Top and other Stars, your paint rivals the finishes on some of those vehicles!!! Great to see your son taking an avid interest in the project, I'm betting a future MTF member!!!!

Keep up the great work!:thThumbsU
