I have a 2000 445 with 775 hours. It runs OK but stutters when I engage the mower deck. When I increase rpms (w/o PTO engaged) it stutters and surges for a moment. The other day I ran it wide open at max speed to pick up my mail. When I got back to the house it ran really rough like it was firing on one cylinder.
Is there anything to tune up besides changing spark plugs?

You might have a bad coil or the wires aren't making a good connection. Coils are kind of common to change on these. Some of them just get a little wet and they misfire. Once they dry out they are okay again.

Also oil, oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter. At 700 hours it wouldn't hurt to adjust your valve lash.

From what you describe it sounds like you may be running on one cylinder. A tune up that's due would be a good place to start and it needs doing anyways.

Let me try this again now that I am on my PC.

You did not say if this is new to you or if any other work has ever been done to this tractor? Besides plugs air filter & fuel filter you may want to change oil & filter too.
Also check or just change out all vacuum and fuel return hoses so you know they are good.
To replace the main return hose, fuel filter and main supply lines you need to remove the fender pan.

I am fighting a surge when hot on my 445 w/832 hr on it. I just did the under hood houses and cleaned all but 1 elect. connections. I am doing a few things at a time so I can see what will the fix was, if I was to do everything at once I would not know what fixed it.

Let us know if you get it fixed

I have owned it for 2 years. I changed the hydraulic fluid and filter when I got it. Changed the engine oil and filter last fall. Pulled the spark plugs off this afternoon - they look fine but old- might be the original plugs. The left side coil and engine area was really dirty whereas the right side was clean. Must be how the air flows. Pre-filter looks pretty ragged. I'll pick up a new one of those. The air filter itself looked ok. Probably time for a fuel filter. I'll check the valves too.
I'll let you know if I find anything.

It sounds like you have some things that could be looked in to.
Reminds me I should pick up some new plugs for mine as they look like they came with the motor.

Went to the dealer today to get some parts. He said he needed the engine code to look up the spark plugs. I told him it had CJ8 plugs so he sold me those. But now I'm not sure those are right. The engine code is FD620D. Anyone know what spark plugs it should have?

All of the 425 and 445 have the Kawasaki FD620D engine in them. There are different version of them though starting with the basics of the 425 having a carb and the 445 being fuel injected. There MIGHT be a sticker on the front of the engine but most are missing. He should be able to help you with the serial number of the tractor though.

The engine tag says FD620D. Called the dealer with tractor serial number and he confirmed CJ8 is correct.

New spark plugs seem to have improved it quite a bit. I think it is OK now. Also changed out the fuel filter. Removed the deck and used my creeper. Took about 1/2 hour.

Also pull one spark plug wire off at a time. If you unplug one and the tractor shuts off, the other plug or plug wire is bad on the other side of the tractor.
