Do the wheels look like they can be extended out? Will this make the axle weaker, does it help with stability, would you guys do it, what if they haven't been out in 30 years, is it hard to get them extended? Also what is the rectangular electrical gizmo on the underside of the brace that runs under the hood from the dash to the grill? Mine has no wires to it but has electrical conections.

the rear wheels are normal. Thats not axle extenders, thats your hubs. I run 100lbs per side of wheelweights on my 990 and have hauled stupid heavy loads of wood, and haven't had any issues.

I'm not sure what that other pic is of.

Are you sure? My instruction manual says that each rear wheel can be adjusted out 2 3/4" on the axle to give greater stability on hilly terrain. Maybe I don't have this, i wil look closer tomorrow, thanks! Jim

well yours looks exactly like mine. I never thought mine has axle extenders. I could be wrong. I am sure blacksmithman will have a definative answer. He usually does.

I have very hilly terrain and have no issues. The 990 footprint is pretty wide.

I noticed on some pics of peoples 990s the wheels are over half way out past the fender and mine aren't quite half way, same size tires. I think that that hex head bolt you see in the close up pics is for the extenders.

could be. I have larger tires on mine, and they aren't 1/2 way out.

My non-990 MTD has one; my belief was that it is some kind of modern cheapo regulator that works like a relay when the voltage from the stator is high enough.

No idea why it would be on your 990 though. But then if we were going to talk about odd things on your 990, what's that big black behind your right headlight?

I don't know, that's not typical? Maybe it is an antique Garmin. I think after looking at my wiring diagram it is the voltage regulator. I think maybe after looking at the diagram the component on the brace maybe a bypassed safety switch. The wiring diagram shows one in front of the dash on the right. I wonder if they bypassed it and stored it there for future use?

Yes mine has that switch also with no wires hooked to it. as far as the wheels go let me know what you find. I noticed that my 998 wheels do sit at least 4 inches wider than my 990s. But the 998 has differant axle housings also.

The wheels do extend. Here is a picture before and after. I do not know how far the moved about 1". I have been using them in this position for a long time. I had to use a puller to move them after I loosened the set screw. Not all axles may have a snap ring to stop the collar.

The little silver box (item 16) is a circuit breaker on the schematic it is attached to the + battery and + to the ammeter. It may not be labeled in the older schematics.

He is correct it is a circuit breaker. If this is not in the circuit you should at least have a fusible link. This is current protection, had a wire to one of the safety switches under the battery get caught in the steering gear and shorted. This little circuit breaker kept tripping and one of the wires started to melt the insulation. If it hadn't been there might of lost the whole tractor.

As to the axle hubs my manual says you can extend them for more stability, they should be all the way in when running the tiller. I haven't tried to adjust mine yet.

besides sliding the hubs all the way out on the axle shafts to change the width between the rear wheels you can also flip the rear wheels around which will make the rear track narrower or wider depending on which way they are mounted.
